Here's why we need Wii U.
2
Anyone can be like a superhero.
3
Silly rabbit, tricks are for kids.
4
Hi, I'm Brett.
5
Kids spend a lot of time on screens these days.
6
And where there are screens, there are ads.
7
And lots of them.
8
In this video, you're going to learn how advertising rewires kids' brains.
9
Carl Sagan once said that the visions we offer our children shape the future.
10
But these days we're not treating kids like shapers of the future, we're treating them like shoppers of the future.
11
How?
12
By serving up ads everywhere.
13
On TV, with product placements and the shows they watch, in apps and even in video games.
14
But kids don't always understand that advertising isn't designed to shape them into healthy, happy adults.
15
It's designed to sell them more stuff.
16
Some marketers even intentionally take advantage of young people's insecurities
17
and their desire to fit in and that's all
18
because advertisers care about what's best for their bottom line not what's best for kids
19
so what do children learn from this constant stream of advertising kids learn
20
that buying more stuff leads to more happiness in short the more ads kids see the more materialistic they become
21
that means that they're more likely to say they want to be rich
22
and famous when they grow up and that having lots of money is important to learn more I talked to this guy.
23
Josh from Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood explained some of the consequences of these materialistic values.
24
Research shows that kids who are more materialistic report lower levels of happiness
25
and that's not surprising given that materialism teaches us that stuff is what's important.
26
In fact it's actually our relationships and our life satisfaction that makes us happy.
27
These materialistic kids also have lower academic performance and it may be
28
because they're more concerned with appearing successful than actually learning new skills
29
and ideas and when it comes to sharing
30
and caring well they don't care about that either
31
when asked what they would do with the money
32
if they won the lottery kids who were more materialistic are less likely to say they would use
33
that money to help others oh yeah they're less likely to care about the environment too the research shows
34
that materialistic kids are less likely to recycle or turn off the lights
35
when they leave a room but advertising doesn't just affect kids brains it's harming their bodies too.
36
About 98 % of televised food ads that kids see are for unhealthy foods like soda, candy, and fast food.
37
Studies have shown the more ads for unhealthy food that kids see, the more of this unhealthy food that they eat, raising their risk for obesity, diabetes, and other health complications.
38
Black and Hispanic kids and teens are exposed to twice as much junk food marketing as their white peers.
39
So yeah, advertising is really bad for children and for society at large.
40
But here's the good news.
41
People know that advertising to children is a problem.
42
In one poll in 2014, 57 % of respondents supported banning all advertising to children.
43
You can be part of the solution too.
44
Let's help kids understand what commercials and marketing are all about and teach them that more stuff doesn't bring more happiness.
45
Just as kids learn negative lessons from advertising, they can unlearn it too.
46
And that starts by asking questions.
47
If you watch media with your children, that gives you the opportunity to have conversations when the advertisements come on.
48
You can ask your children, what is the ad trying to do?
49
Who made it?
50
But it's also important to reduce children's screen time.
51
Not only will that improve their academic performance, help with their relationships, and make them more physically healthy, but it will also reduce their exposure to advertising,
52
which is trying to convince them of the big lie, that stuff will make them happy.
53
Groups like the Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood can help.
54
So the Campaign for Commercial -Free Childhood has all sorts of resources to help parents
55
and caregivers reduce the amount of time that children spend with ad -supported screens.
56
And finally, we advocate for policies that would protect children from marketing, because if we want less materialistic kids, it's important that we change the rules of society so
57
that all kids have a chance to grow up and be citizens first and consumers later.
58
Thank you.

Why Kids and Ads Matter: A Real-Life Conversation

Imagine sitting with a friend discussing how screens and ads shape children’s lives. The video we’re exploring dives into this, using everyday language like “silly rabbit, Trix are for kids” and “get in loser, we’re going shopping” to make complex ideas relatable. This scenario mirrors real conversations you might have with colleagues, parents, or even friends—perfect for practicing shadow speak to sound natural.

Useful Chunks & Collocations to Master

  • “rewires kids’ brains” – A vivid phrase to describe long-term effects (great for debates!)
  • “bottom line” – Refers to profit, common in business and casual talks: “They care about their bottom line, not kids.”
  • “materialistic values” – Describes prioritizing stuff over relationships: “Materialistic values can lower happiness.”
  • “reduce screen time” – A key tip for parents, easy to use in daily chats: “We need to reduce screen time to cut ad exposure.”
  • “advocate for policies” – Means pushing for change: “Groups advocate for policies to protect kids.”

Memorizing these chunks will help you speak more fluently and sound like a native. Plus, they’re perfect for shadowing practice—repeat them aloud to nail rhythm and intonation!

Your Shadowing Challenge: Improve English Pronunciation Today

Ready to practice? Here’s your task: Pick 3 lines from the video (like “Kids spend a lot of time on screens these days” or “The more ads kids see, the more materialistic they become”). Use a shadowing app or shadowing site to play each line, then repeat it immediately—mimic the speed, stress, and tone. Do this 5 times for each line. This “shadowspeak” technique trains your brain and mouth to work together, making your pronunciation clearer and more natural. Don’t worry if it feels tricky at first—every repetition gets you closer to sounding confident!

Remember, the goal is to have fun while learning. Keep practicing, and soon you’ll be using these phrases in your own conversations. You’ve got this!
