5
hello everybody my name is andrew and i'm jeremy and you're listening to kulips
6
jeremy how's it going it is going well today really every day is going well for me because if it wasn't,
7
I wouldn't say so.
8
So everything is going well.
9
How about you, Andrew?
10
I'm doing well as well.
11
But I have to say that I like that attitude.
12
Usually when people ask me, how's it going?
13
Even if I'm having a terrible, terrible day, I lie and say, oh, it's great.
14
I'm doing well.
15
But you're more honest than I am.
16
Yeah.
17
Is that a Canadian thing?
18
Canadian people seem to always be very positive pma positive mental attitude i think yeah there is something to
19
that idea that a positive attitude can affect your mood even
20
if you're not feeling
21
so good smile at everything right that's good good life advice
22
jeremy today we are going to talk about sleep sleep sleep
23
so we'll do a simplified speech episode today
24
and for all the listeners out there
25
that don't know simplified speech is our series that's really targeted at high beginners
26
and intermediate level learners and we have totally natural unscripted conversations
27
but we speak at a slightly slower pace than we would do in our everyday lives.
28
True.
29
Yes.
30

36
Okay, Jeremy, time to talk about sleep.
37
You were joking before we started recording here that you are qualified to talk about this topic.
38
Yes, at least more qualified than talking about the World Cup.
39
Right, which we did several episodes ago.
40
Yes.
41
And that's because you sleep every night.
42
Are you a deep sleeper?
43
Do you get a high quality sleep?
44
Well, I definitely think I am a light sleeper.
45
Okay.
46
More than most.
47
But more recently, I have been getting better sleep than I did in my younger years.
48
What about you?
49
You know, the reason that I wanted to talk about sleep today is because maybe over the last year or so,
50
I've noticed my sleep patterns change a lot.
51
I went from being a deep sleeper
52
and someone who could sleep all the way through the night and easily sleep for eight hours a day,
53
no problems, to being someone who's quite a light sleeper
54
and I struggle to get more than six hours of sleep
55
a day even though I want to sleep more it's a
56
real real struggle to be able to get more sleep I wonder why
57
that is I don't know some of my friends have said
58
that I'm doing too many things and I have too many things on my mind
59
that might be part of it it might be yeah psychological
60
it might also be physiological physiological body related yeah related to my body
61
because i'm getting older and i think this is a natural
62
process of aging is
63
that as you get older your body requires less sleep maybe it doesn't require less sleep
64
but i know when i think about my grandparents
65
when i was younger yeah they sleep for like four hours a day
66
which yeah they would wake up at like 4 a .m
67
and take a walk and yeah Read the newspaper
68
and eat breakfast all by the time that I would wake up at 7 to go to school.
69
Same here.
70
It could be psychological, could be physiological.
71
I'm not exactly sure.
72
Have you heard about the blue light thing?
73
Yeah, I have heard about this, but I'm sure there's some listeners out there that don't know.
74
Do you want to explain that?
75
Sure.
76
These days, people use smartphones or computers or TVs to watch different things,
77
and often at night, people watch something,
78
and there is what they call blue light it's not actually blue it doesn't look blue
79
but it is essentially bright light
80
and this bright light sends a signal to the brain through
81
your eyes saying hey it's daytime wake up there's bright light here it's not time to sleep
82
so So when you watch something late at night and then try to go to sleep right after that,
83
usually it is very hard to sleep.
84
Your brain is still awake.
85
Your thoughts are still happening very quickly.
86
Your brain is very active so sleep does not come
87
and sometimes you know
88
when i was a kid i did this a lot i would watch tv
89
or go on the computer until right before i went to bed
90
and sometimes i would lay in my bed for hours without sleeping right i couldn't sleep right
91
so awake so now i respect this natural rhythm
92
and before i go to sleep i do not look at any bright lights only dim lights like maybe candles
93
or i have a red light in my room red light has the opposite effect it tells your brain
94
that it's sunset it's time to sleep it's time to calm down
95
and since i started doing
96
that my sleep has improved a lot a lot actually yeah
97
i'm with you 100 on the blue light reduction thing i have programs on my phone
98
and my computer to eliminate the blue light at night yeah
99
i turn off all the lights in my apartment once the
100
sun sets nice i've hung up an extra curtain over top
101
of my curtains to block out all the street light nice
102
and i wear a sleep mask at night wow because i think
103
that the light has really been affecting me once i learned about this idea
104
that blue light can affect our sleep i thought maybe that's why i'm only sleeping six hours a night it's
105
because the light is messing with my brain
106
but hasn't really helped at all really hasn't helped
107
but what can you do what can you do well i
108
guess we will have to leave this one to our listeners and see
109
if they find this tip helpful maybe they could even let
110
us know in a comment on the Q -Lips Facebook page or on Twitter.
111
Yeah, absolutely.
112
