1
I want to go to medicine school.
2
I want to be a sparky.
3
And I really want to be a pediatric occupational therapist.
4
Probably playing professional sports, like basketball-wise.
5
Your future career is probably something you've already thought about.
6
But have you ever wondered whether AI could change that?
7
AI does know a lot more than normal human does.
8
I think like a sparky, like AI's not going to do none of that.
9
Personally, I haven't thought about that.
10
That's actually a really good question.
11
What if like basketball doesn't work out but like AI has taken over, you know, all these jobs and it's like what am I gonna do?
12
I can easily imagine a world where 30-40% of the tasks
13
that happen in the economy today get done by AI and they're not very distant future.
14
There's been a lot of talk about the impact to artificial intelligence will have on jobs.
15
I think plumbers are less at risk.
16
Okay, I'm gonna become a plumber.
17
Someone like a legal assistant, a paralegal, they're not gonna be needed for very long.
18
So it's no wonder it's on a lot of young people's minds.
19
How the students learn will be different.
20
How people do their work will be different.
21
My prediction is that work will be optional.
22
Optional.
23
Optional.
24
Um, so...
25
In a recent survey in the US, 69% of college students say they're worried about finding a job after they graduate, specifically because of AI replacing some jobs.
26
Because of this, 22% are changing their area of study and 12% are changing their career paths altogether.
27
So, what do Aussie students think about it?
28
IT.
29
I can't do IT because of AI, so it kind of stopped me from learning IT.
30
To have a voice in politics, that's, like, something I'm extremely keen on.
31
I don't think AI has ever really influenced that.
32
I don't think AI is going to steal everybody's jobs at the end of the day, but for something like business, they probably would knock a few people off their chairs.
33
Yeah, I think it would influence what, like, career I choose, you know?
34
There has been a change over the last few years in terms of the courses that students are interested in.
35
This is Kim Payneau.
36
She works at the University's Admissions Centre here in Australia, which is a place that can help you apply to a bunch of unis.
37
She says a lot of students are thinking about what jobs they'll be able to get with their degrees after uni.
38
There's been a huge increase in interest in health-related courses,
39
so more interest in things like occupational therapy or speech pathology or physiotherapy.
40
The courses that students are less interested in, actually IT over the last few years has dropped.
41
There might be a sense that health-related jobs are relatively immune from AI in the future.
42
It's too soon to tell whether that's it anyway.
43
Recently, the Australian government released a report on how AI might impact jobs.
44
It said hands-on jobs like carers, electricians and gardeners are less likely to be taken over by AI in the future compared to computer-based jobs like receptionists,
45
programmers and accountants.
46
And while they say AI could reshape the workforce, there's no evidence AI is causing mass job losses in Australia...yet.
47
Well, some of the world's biggest companies have decided today is a great day to sack a whole bunch of workers.
48
And yes, you can see the fingerprints of artificial intelligence.
49
This year, there have been some big news stories about companies replacing workers with AI.
50
Now, the shift has everyday Australians growing very anxious that their job could be the next to go.
51
But we've also seen some of those companies rehire the people they fired, Because while AI can perform some tasks, there's still a lot it can't do,
52
like understanding emotions or using human judgement.
53
It's why some people argue that AI will only change jobs rather than simply wipe them out.
54
The narrative about AI destroying jobs is exactly backwards.
55
AI automates tasks away, but it doesn't necessarily eliminate jobs.
56
And the reason for that is because the job of a person has a purpose, and that purpose has many tasks.
57
If I study journalism, I'm not too worried about AI impacting
58
that job because of the emotional aspect that humans bring to everything.
59
You can't really replicate face-to-face interactions.
60
We're social creatures.
61
We require human interaction.
62
If we were interacting with only AI, the world would be a really depressed place.
63
Still, experts say it's important that education keeps up with changes in technology.
64
New research from Instructure has found that 75% of Aussie educators see helping graduates adapt to changing careers as super important.
65
But less than half felt confident their institution had a plan to help them do it.
66
Absolutely, universities can always do more.
67
I think we can always do more in any topic.
68
But we want to make sure that the learning that we provide our students is going to prepare them as graduates.
69
This is Professor Kat Faulkner and Professor John Williams from Adelaide Uni.
70
They say a lot of universities are embracing AI and that it's starting to pop up in a lot of course curriculums.
71
All our basic degrees now want to know where does AI fit in?
72
And I think watch this space, This is going to be so much rethinking about what the degree looks forward to.
73
But importantly, people should always follow the careers of the things they're interested in
74
and know that they're going to have to be learning throughout their lives, as we all do.
75
Mm, that's nothing new.
76
That's nothing new.
77
So, while no-one knows exactly what the jobs of the future will look like...
78
How can I assist you further?
79
..rather than trying to pick a career that AI can never touch, some say it's important to learn how to adapt.
80
Oh, and follow your dreams.
81
The technology is moving way faster than our ability to understand how it's going to actually land ultimately.
82
And so you can feel like what's the point of anything, but I really think no matter what, broadening your education,
83
doing something that you're interested in and really delving into
84
that deeply is going to give you the types of brain power
85
and skill that you're going to need to navigate whatever comes, you know?
86
Yeah, moral of the story, do what you love, hey?
87
Do what you love and that literally has not changed at all.
88
That's still really good advice.
89
I think I'll stick to a sparky, yeah.
