4
answering passenger queries and so on.
5
I used to work in the back office,
6
but I wanted to better myself,

and then reapplied for work on the ship.

That's what's good about this line of work.

lots of couples, but families too.

but most people here are older than me.
18
I was going nowhere professionally,
19
so thought I'd try my hand here.

27
Speaker three.
28
Well, I'm a bit of an oddity,
29
actually, because I'm a whole lot older than most people who work on board.
30
I'm sixty-eight.
31
Also, I don't get paid.
32
That's right.
33
Many people ask me why I do it,
34
but I have the chance to go on all these wonderful cruises for absolutely nothing.
35
My role is to accompany the groups when they go ashore and make sure everything runs smoothly.
36
It's perfect.
37
I spend all my time with the passengers and I've made some lovely friends over the years.
38
My husband does the same thing,
39
but it's a shame it's on another ship, though.

41
Speaker 4 I'm a chef.
42
Catering is hard work.
43
It's really full on most of the time.
44
Some nights I can't wait to get back to the cabin and put my feet up,
45
even if the space is a bit small.
46
My wife's a childminder on board,
47
and although we work completely different hours,
48
it's ideal really, because otherwise I wouldn't see much of her.
49
I qualified and worked in a restaurant in Canada,
50
but I always wanted to travel.
51
It's not a luxurious lifestyle for the staff on board,
52
but the job does allow me to see new places.
53
Speaker 5 I work in the tour office,
54
organising the tours that the passengers can go on when we make our various stops.
55
Although the pay isn't great,
56
especially as we don't make any tips like they do in the restaurant,
57
there are other perks.
58
There are like loads of courses we can do.
59
I've learnt Italian and brushed up my computer skills since I've been doing this job.
60
The staff's social activities are fantastic,
61
almost as good as the passengers' entertainment.

On the whole, the passengers are really nice.
63
I mean, I love seeing them all dressed up in their posh clothes going in for dinner.
