This is the Cambridge English First, Test 1.
6
I'm going to give you the instructions for this test.
7
I shall introduce each part of the test and give you time to look at the questions.
8
At the start of each piece, you'll hear this sound.
9
You'll hear each piece twice.
10
Remember, while you're listening, write your answers on the question paper.
11
You'll have five minutes at the end of the test to copy your answers onto the separate answer sheet.
12
There will now be a pause.
13
Please ask any questions now because you must not speak during the test.
14
Now open your question paper and look at part one.
15
You will hear people talking in eight different situations.
16
For questions 1 to 8, choose the best answer A, B or C.
17
Question 1.
18
You hear a woman talking on her mobile phone about a missing piece of furniture.
19
I see.
20
It wasn't in the van.
21
But never mind, I'll call the removals company.
22
It's okay, I'm sure it'll be fine.
23
I just wonder what they've done with it.
24
I mean, it isn't something you can easily lose, is it?
25
You'd think someone would have noticed almost straight away.
26
I'm sure it'll turn up very soon.
27
So don't get too upset about it.
28
It's just rather odd.
29
And considering all the things that could have gone wrong, I think we've been fairly lucky, really.
30
Don't you?
31
I see.
32
It wasn't in the van.
33

45
Question two.
46
You hear two students talking about their current course topic.
47
I think the lectures are really fascinating, don't you?
48
Only if you're interested in that period of history.
49
You'd think the lecture would have moved on to the next period by now.
50
It's much more interesting.
51
But we needed extra time on it because it's such a complex area.
52
Yeah, I can't make head nor tail of it.
53
We need to get to grips with it though or we won't be able to manage what's coming next.
54
But is it really useful anyway?
55
Oh, come on.
56
Let's get a coffee.
57

68
You hear two business people talking about a contract.
69
Have you heard that the contract's been cancelled?
70
No, I had no idea.
71
You must be really annoyed after all the work you put into it.
72
Initially I was, yes.
73
I spent three weeks putting it all together and the company were really positive about it.
74
But then I found out that they're in some financial difficulty.
75
so it's really unfortunate for them.
76
We've worked with them for years.
77
It was a huge contract, wasn't it?
78
What are you going to do now?
79
Well, we've just had a very big order from one of our trusted clients, so that's taken any pressure off.
80

92
You must be thrilled after the announcement that you've won such a famous art prize.
93
Well, to be honest, I'm not quite sure how I feel yet.
94
I'd always wondered about the idea of an art prize.
95
I mean, it's not exactly a competition, so it seems strange.
96
And you never quite know what the judges are looking for when they pick a winner.
97
Really?
98
Well, yes, but actually, when I was on my own in the studio, I felt much more positive about it, and even started dreaming about how my career would change now,
99
not to mention what I'll do with the money.
100
Well, good luck.

112
I don't mind when you come over as long as it isn't too late.
113
6.30 would be fine and give us time to have a really good chat.
114
Is that okay?
115
I have to get up early on Thursday morning because I have to get the earlier flight.
116
I'd booked myself on a 10 o'clock one, but that's been cancelled.
117
There's another one in the afternoon, but I'd miss the meeting if I took that one.
118
It's a bit of a nuisance, but there you go.
119
Anyway, it'll be great to see you.

133
I want to say something about the difficulty of learning to be a musician.
134
It takes thousands of hours of practice.
135
You have to be blessed with talent.
136
You have to have day jobs until you finally make it, but if you have a passion for something and you work hard enough, you'll get there.

152
It's obvious I haven't worn them and I've still got the receipt.
153
Is it because I bought them online?

You hear a woman talking about a radio chat show.
175
I love listening to the Claire Nolan show on Friday at 8 o'clock.
176
She has great guests and they often have a good time together on the show.
177
Claire has a way of getting people to say things which come across as very funny.
178
She doesn't come across as a celebrity, but more a normal person who is clever and tells us things we don't know in an enthusiastic and useful manner.
179
She's good at doing that, at the same time as making her guests feel involved.
180
So many presenters nowadays seem to use their shows just to show off their own talents, but not Claire Nolan.

About This Lesson

You're practicing English with "FCE First 1 Listening Part 1 Test 1 (Transcript + Key)" using the Shadowing technique — a method originally developed for professional interpreter training.

Focus on sounding like the speaker — not just repeating words. With 15–30 minutes of daily practice, you'll build real-world speaking confidence.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
