Shadowing Practice: How to Find Out What's Really on Your Mind - Learn English Speaking with Video

Creating lesson...
1
In order to find out what's really on your mind, we suggest one of the great exercises of modern psychology,
2
what is known as a sentence completion test.
3
The test involves looking at a series of unfinished sentences or sentence stubs and completing them as fast as possible,
4
letting whatever first comes into one's mind to rise to the surface, thereby giving one chance to discover what one deep down,
5
unconsciously, really feels, fears, wants, regrets or a crossabout.
6
We're going to flash up some of these sentences on the screen in a second.
7
As they show up, look at them for an instant and then say the very first thing that comes into the mind,
8
however shocking, direct or emotional it happens to be.
9
The The The The
10
The The
11
The The Thank you.
12
Thank you.
13
Now you're done, reflect on what ways your answers might be slightly different to what you would ordinarily have understood about yourself.
14
What might you have learnt about who you could really be?

About This Lesson

You're practicing English with "How to Find Out What's Really on Your Mind" using the Shadowing technique — a method originally developed for professional interpreter training.

Focus on sounding like the speaker — not just repeating words. With 15–30 minutes of daily practice, you'll build real-world speaking confidence.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
