hello guys and welcome back to my channel we are currently in rome
2
and it's a dream come true to be here we are
3
so happy it's currently 10 o'clock and we are heading out
4
and the plan for the beginning of the day is to do a bit of sightseeing before we get breakfast.
5
So we booked our hotel through booking.com and we just thought
6
that it was a random hotel not located in the city center
7
or anything but we were surprised when we arrived
8
because the traffic here is insane and there's like restaurant on every single corner here.
9
Today it's supposed to be 34 degrees and I don't think we are prepared for this type of heat.
10
Maybe we should do a little outfit check before we head out.
11
So these are our outfits.
12
I'm wearing Birkenstocks with some white socks.
13
Trying that for the first time.
14
I literally spent like 40 minutes trying to pick my outfit.
15
It's a struggle now because we've been rotating through all of our outfits like again and again again and again.
16
I'm gonna show you our hotel room.
17
I recorded this clip yesterday when we arrived
18
and we were a little bit surprised because the room is
19
so big and spacious and very clean and very nice
20
because it was pretty cheap so I guess we were very lucky with this one.
21
We were trying to find some interesting places on the way to the breakfast place
22
and we found this castle called Castel Sant Angelo.
23
It's not as busy as the other landmarks so it's definitely a must visit when you're here in Rome.
24
We get this amazing view over the whole city,
25
for example the Saint Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City.
26
It's just the view is breathtaking.
27
It's been a very good start of the day but now it's time for some hydration, some food.
28
So we are gonna go to the coffee spot that Helgi found.
29
What is it called?
30
Barnum Roma and it's one of the places that you guys recommend it.
31
You guys always share the best spots and we are so grateful to get all of these tips and tricks.
32
Honestly it's made our trips like 10 times better so...
33
we just bought these sunglasses i forgot mine at home
34
and these are actually for helki
35
but today i will be using them since i didn't bring ones
36
but barnum roma the breakfast spot that we went to
37
was so nice it's definitely a recommendation to you guys
38
if you are in rome the staff was
39
so friendly our waitress was from norway
40
and i actually spotted it myself i heard her say something
41
and i was like oh my god she is probably from like scandinavia
42
and i was right overall a very nice breakfast place or lunch whatever
43
We were walking down this random street and all of these people were selling like jewelry.
44
They had like these jewelry stands and usually it's all of the same stuff over
45
and over it's like I think it's mass-produced
46
but then we found like a very special stand
47
and the guy was making the jewelry himself and I found this one
48
and I immediately fell in love I think it's so cool
49
and he made it on the spot it was
50
so cool to see it
51
and I ended up buying two pieces one for my best friend i think this is definitely something
52
that she would love so we are going to be matching
53
we are so fascinated by the city the streets are so alive and of course because of its rich history
54
it's so cool to be able to visit these iconic ancient landmarks
55
and now we are off to the legendary trevi fountain
56
we walked past this place that we had seen on tick tock it's a place
57
that serves only takeaway drinks and it's only five euros they have after all spritz
58
and other cocktails so I think we're gonna cool down a bit and have a dream.
59
We are on a vintage store hunt.
60
I got a message on Instagram that I should be able to find some cool vintage stores in a neighborhood called Monty.
61
So we are currently strolling the streets here and are on a hunt for a cool vintage store.
62
I found this really cool shirt that I wanted to try out.
63
It's a bit different than I usually buy, but it looks cool.
64
I also have a few things that I want to try on.
65
I think these look pretty cool.
66
They are kind of like jorts.
67
So let's try it on.
68
We are
69
at the Colosseum
70
and it's truly magical to see it in real life it
71
feels unreal we unfortunately didn't manage to get tickets to get inside
72
because you guys know
73
that our trip was quite spontaneous to go on this interrail
74
it's like fully booked until like august to go to the coliseum
75
so i don't think we would have been able to get tickets
76
so we don't want to be sad about it
77
but we can admire the beauty from the outside
78
and yeah it's amazing this day has been really successful we've been able to see
79
so many things and explore the city really well i think
80
but we're getting kind of tired and hungry
81
so i think it's time for dinner we're going to a roman restaurant called trattoria the anso al 29
82
and we're hoping that we can order like cassio pepe
83
or carbonara because we're really craving some pasta spaghetti or something like
84
that it takes about 25 minutes to walk over there
85
and it's located in the Trastavere neighborhood which is supposed to be really nice
86
and we're going to explore that more tomorrow so very excited about that
87
We were a bit shocked when we arrived at the restaurant
88
because the line was insane i've never seen a line this long for like a table at a restaurant
89
so yeah we're not gonna wait for like two hours to
90
get a table there i think you can get decent pasta everywhere it's gonna be fine we will find something nice
91
It's a new day in Rome
92
and today we are going to explore the Vatican City
93
and then later we are going to go to the neighborhood Trastevere
94
and probably something more very exciting but we are gonna start our day by having a panini.
95
We found a sandwich shop close to our hotel.
96
So yeah, we're gonna head out and grab some paninis.
97
The paninis were very tasty and it was a great way to start the day.
98
But however, we took a very bad decision and bought this can of San Pellegrino.
99
We thought it would be like a bitter lemonade or something,
100
but it tastes like a bad medicine.
101
Don't buy this at all.
102
Just don't buy it.
103
We have arrived in the Vatican City.
104
We are currently waiting in line to get into the St. Peter's Basilica.
105
There's free admission and the line is pretty long
106
but it goes by pretty quickly so I think it's only going to be like 20 minutes or something.
107
We are speechless after visiting the St. Peter's Basilica.
108
We didn't expect it to be this magnificent.
109
Honestly, it was so beautiful.
110
It doesn't look so big from the outside,
111
but when you get inside, it's just huge.
112
We were talking about that this was the biggest church that we've been to,
113
and then we figured out it is the biggest church in the world,
114
so that makes sense.
115
It was so amazing to be able to see the masterpieces inside the church.
116
For example, Michelangelo, he designed the dome,
117
and it was so beautiful.
118
We also saw La Pieda,
119
which is one of his most famous artworks.
120
So yeah, St. Peter's Basilica is definitely a must visit if you're here in Rome.
121
And especially since it's free admission,
122
so there's no excuse for not going.
123
So we are gonna have a walk and we were thinking about having some tiramisu.
124
We got recommended a place called Two Sizes.
125
And apparently it's supposed to be the best tiramisu in Rome.
126
And you guys know that we love tiramisu.
127
So we need to go and give it a try
128
Very very tasty but I don't think it's the best one I've had Okay,
129
the pistachio one is really good I guess it's called two sizes because they have two sizes.
130
We got a big one.
131
We saw people walking with a small one and we were like that's way too small.
132
Thank you.
133
We were on our way to go to Trastevear,
134
the neighborhood that we planned on visiting today,
135
But we decided to take a little detour and visit the Gianiculum Hill
136
Which is like a scenic spot where you get a panoramic view over Rome
137
And it is so beautiful But it was a very steep hill to get here
138
And it's like 34 degrees So we are sweating very much
139
So we have been strolling the streets here in Trastevere and it's such a cute neighborhood filled with restaurants,
140
cafes, bars, and we even found a couple of vintage stores that were really nice.
141
But I honestly think that the heat is kind of getting to us.
142
We are just a little bit tired and exhausted.
143
We've also been walking around so much.
144
By the way, we haven't really been taking any like public transport.
145
We've been walking almost the whole time here.
146
We were planning on buying like a weekly pass
147
or 72 hour pass but i would rather walk
148
and just get some fresh air
149
and see the beautiful like surroundings here we have already made a reservation at a place called mariuccia
150
which is an italian pizza place and the pizzas there look delicious
151
and we were also thinking about having supli which is an italian appetizer
152
which is like a ball of rice with tomato sauce
153
and it's like deep fried also looks delicious
154
so we are just gonna walk over there our table is in like 15 minutes
155
so oh i'm so hungry very excited for some pizza
156
we have arrived to our hotel room and it feels
157
so good can't wait to like take a shower
158
and just snuggle in bed
159
but the pizza was really good it was very fluffy it's
160
the fluffiest pizza we've ever had overall our trip in rome has been
161
so fantastic honestly i wouldn't have bought this t-shirt
162
if it wasn't true because we have fallen in love with this city it's just
163
so amazing in many ways first
164
and foremost it's kind of unreal to be surrounded by the city's history
165
and it's so cool to be learning about it
166
and visiting all of these phenomenal places here in rome they're just endless almost
167
and of course we can't forget about the food here it's
168
so delicious you can almost go to any place
169
and you will guaranteed get some delicious food
170
and we just really like the vibe here i think honestly
171
rome is a very high ranked city on our list
172
but yeah we are very tired after this very warm day of walking
173
but we had so much fun here in rome
174
and we will for sure be back
175
and i will be wearing this t-shirt till the day i

Why practice speaking with this video?

Practicing English with travel vlogs, like the one titled "Interrail Diaries | When in Rome," provides an engaging way to enhance your speaking skills. The natural dialogue helps you immerse yourself in real-life contexts, allowing you to experience how native speakers communicate. By shadow speaking along with the video, you not only boost your vocabulary but also get accustomed to different accents and conversational styles. This engaging format is particularly beneficial for those preparing for exams like IELTS, where natural speech is crucial.

Grammar & Expressions in Context

Throughout the video, several key grammatical structures and expressions emerge that can enhance your English fluency:

  • "It's supposed to be...": This phrase is a common way to express expectations about the weather or plans. For example, "Today it's supposed to be 34 degrees."
  • "We were surprised when...": This structure helps convey unexpected reactions, as seen when describing the hotel. Practicing sentences like "We were surprised when we arrived" can improve your ability to express feelings or reactions.
  • "I found this one and I immediately fell in love": This expression is useful for conveying emotions and can be adapted to various contexts. Shadowing similar sentences will help improve English pronunciation and emotional expression.
  • "It’s definitely a must-visit…”: This is a highly effective way to recommend places, which is a common aspect of conversational English.

Common Pronunciation Traps

As you practice with this video, pay attention to certain words and phrases that might pose challenges. Here are a few common pronunciation traps:

  • "Breathtaking": The combination of 'breath' and 'taking' can trip up learners. Focus on the flow between the two parts to sound more fluent.
  • "Hydration": This word's pronunciation can be tricky due to the 'hydr-' sound. Regular practice will help you achieve a more natural accent.
  • "Barnum Roma": Names of places can often be mispronounced. Listen closely to the intonation and stress in the local accent.

By integrating techniques such as shadow speech, you can improve English pronunciation in these contexts. Engage with the video, repeat the phrases, and pay close attention to the nuances of the speaker’s accent. Utilize the expressions and carefully analyze your pronunciation to enhance your overall speaking skills. This is essential not only for casual conversation but also in academic settings, such as IELTS speaking practice.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud — like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1–2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency — making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
