and in the summer there are also a lot of international students doing language courses.

It was closed in 1975 and has since been badly damaged by a series of fires but may reopen one day.

such as the Brighton Festival in May which is the largest arts festival in the UK after Edinburgh.

and a parallel fringe festival of alternative comedy.

The town still remains a popular destination for holidaymakers during weekends and especially spring or summer bank holidays,

where you often have to queue several hours by car to reach the seaside.

In the 60s, it was a meeting point for mods and rockers to have fights along the seafront.

But it's much more peaceful these days.

If you come on New Year's Day, you'll see hundreds of people going for a traditional New Year's swim here.

with temperatures often around freezing.

This is only for the really brave.

That water's cold here, even at the height of summer.
