Hi, danke für die Einladung und danke, dass ich hier sein durfte und danke, dass es auch ganz flexibel an einem Samstag geklappt hat, würde ich auch nochmal sagen.

We are today on a Sunday.

And Lara, we have known you before a while ago and were very impressed with how well you speak German,

almost accent -free German.

And you told us, you have learned German actually very alone.

No school, no teacher, only you and easy German.

Yes, that's right.

That made us kind of like a new one.

So we have invited you today to speak with you about it, how you did it.

And also, maybe, about your methods.

Because there are probably many of you out there, who have to learn German or want and ask yourself what is the right method?

And is it really good, if you just learn alone?

Lara, tell us first, where you came from and how long you've already been in Germany.

I'm Lara, I'm from Syriac, from Latakia, from the coastline of Syria.

I'm now four and a half years in Germany.

I've come 2022.

I work here as a doctor.

Do you live in Bremen, in the beautiful city?

Yes, I already live in Bremen.

How do you like it?

I don't think I can compare it, because I was just anywhere else, maybe in Berlin, but I think Bremen is a small, sweet city.

There you can also be directly in the water and it's actually very nice.

What can you recommend to visit?

Ja, es kann natürlich aber ein bisschen langweilig sein für Leute, die irgendwie in großen Städten gewohnt sind, aber ja, kann ich auf jeden Fall empfehlen.

Nimm uns mal mit, du sagst, du bist seit viereinhalb Jahren in Deutschland und kommst aus Syrien.

Wie war denn dein Leben vorher?

Seit wann wusstest du, dass du nach Deutschland gehen möchtest und wann hast du angefangen, Deutsch zu lernen?

My life was really just from medicine and I worked as a Dolmetscher.

As a Dolmetscher?

Yes, it was between English and Arab English and Tiere retten.

That was really the center of my life in Syrien.

And I think I told Manuel a little bit about it, that I was a Streber.

That was my life between 18 and 24.

Und dann nach Ende meines Studiums, ich wollte sowieso von Anfang an auswandern, schon seitdem ich ein Teenager war.

Und ich wollte erst mal zu einem englischsprachigen Land, weil ich gar keinen Bock hatte, eine neue Sprache zu lernen.

Und dann war es mir klar, so mit 24, 25, dass Deutschland eigentlich der einfachste und schnellste Weg vor allem für Ärzte ist.

Warum?

I think because the doctors are here needed.

And the whole bureaucratic process is a bit, say I say, not so complicated,

as for example if you want to go to the United States or Australia.

It is a bit, it is of course a bit, but it is a bit a bit a bit a bit.

Okay, the bureaucratic process is a bit a bit, but then there is still the language.

Man muss schon gutes Deutsch sprechen, um hier als Ärztin arbeiten zu dürfen.

Genau.

Und ich habe ganz oft gehört, dass die Leute viele Schwierigkeiten mit der Sprache haben.

Und deswegen hatte ich gar keinen Bock drauf am Anfang.

Und ich dachte ja, ich könnte sowieso gut Englisch, dann kann ich einfach erstmal zu einem Englischsprachenland.

Und ich muss sagen, warum ich mich dann letztendlich für Deutschland entschieden habe.

Weil viele Freunde wollen auch nach Deutschland.

Und ich dachte ja, es wäre cool, wenn man irgendwie mit seinen Leuten da ist.

And then I thought, why not?

Then we'll do it in Germany.

What did you know about Germany?

Well, honestly, what I knew about Germany was about Germany, were the typical consequences of the negative things.

What do you mean?

A lot of bureaucracy.

A little Xenophobia.

Also, a lot of weather.

People are cold and have no emotions.

And then there is still the language, so you didn't speak German before 6 years, or when did you start?

About 5 years, I would say.

I was 25, I started with 25 and I came with 26 to Germany.

So the whole learning process has been about a year.

What did you do after a year?

I already had the B2 -Prüfung.

Wow.

Also von 0 auf B2 in einem Jahr und bist du

in der Zeit in eine Sprachschule gegangen in Syrien oder was hast du gemacht?

Nee, weil ich wollte es, das war mir klar von Anfang an, ich wollte überhaupt nicht in eine Sprachschule.

Diese ganze konventionelle Methode war für mich von Anfang an, also ich gebe euch ein Beispiel, ich könnte sehr gut Englisch und das lag glaube ich daran,

dass ich als Teenager so viel Medien konsumiert habe.

Und ich dachte mir so, okay, ich mache das genauso mit Deutsch, aber ich mache das ein bisschen intensiver.

And that was my idea.

I didn't want to go to a language school three times a week and then have a job.

That didn't want to go.

And then you just looked at YouTube.

Yeah, I must say, at the beginning it was very chaotic.

I was not structured.

I had no plan.

Mein Plan war, ich will nicht in einer Sprachschule.

Und ich dachte mir so, okay, ich muss einfach ein kleines Deutschlands bei mir zu Hause bauen.

Also ich muss einfach viel Exposition.

Ich weiß, das ist der Schlüssel beim Sprachlernen.

Und dann habe ich über YouTube geguckt.

Ich habe nach einer guten Quelle gesucht und da gibt es eigentlich viele.

Und dann bin ich über Easy German gestolpert.

Und genau, das war, glaube ich, für mich erstmal der Vorteil beim Easy German war, so that you have so Unterdill -Funktion and that makes it much easier

because I don't have to do it directly in a different window, because I had to learn with my laptop.

And have you then just opened our Anfänger -Videos, our Playlist with the A1 -Videos and just started to look at it?

Yeah.

Also das erste Mal, ehrlich gesagt, als ich Easy German Videos aufgemacht habe, ich glaube ich B1.

Also ich habe ein bisschen mehr fortgeschrittene Videos aufgemacht, nur um zu gucken, wie reden denn die Leute?

Wie klingt die Sprache überhaupt?

Und das finde ich wirklich super.

Das finde ich wird oft unterschätzt, dass man erst mal so sich die Sprachmelodie anhört und erst mal schaut, wie klingt diese Sprache überhaupt?

How did I do that?

For me, learning was for me either active or passive.

And I thought that I had to do some kind of activity. About 40%.

Und dann habe ich angefangen, Sätze aufzuschreiben, wo ich merke, das könnte ein Satz, was ich irgendwann anwenden könnte.

It was really a trial and error.

Also ich habe schon immer auch viel alleine geübt, so wie du, aber ich hatte immer auch Sprachunterricht als Baustein.

Das muss, man muss ja auch einen gewissen, also es ist ja auch ein bisschen eine Charakterfrage, ne, ob man so glücklich ist mit sich selbst, alleine zu Hause.

Es ist aber vielleicht auch eine finanzielle Frage manchmal oder auch eine logistische Frage, weil viele Menschen leben an einem Ort,

wo sie vielleicht nicht jederzeit mit jemandem sprechen können.

Ich finde das aber interessant, weil du hast dich ja bewusst dafür entschieden, dass du sagst, okay, ich gehe jetzt nicht in eine Schule, da wird mir langweilig.

Ich möchte das alleine selbst machen und ich kreiere mir sogar eine kleine deutsche Welt bei mir zu Hause.

Vielleicht kannst du uns noch mal so ein paar Tipps geben, wenn jetzt jemand zuhört und sagt, boah, das möchte ich auch besser machen, dass ich mir ein bisschen,

I didn't have rules for myself.

My rule was, I want to bring so much German content into it.

And I had to look every day, how much time I had for German.

And then, I think for me it was so, I had motivation.
