So, Chantal, you were saying that you grew up in a small town and had a very rustic life, but then you moved overseas to Italy, correct?
2
Yes, I moved to Bologna, Bologna, Italy.
3
Wow, that's such a huge transition.
4
What was that like?
5
And why did you move to Italy?
6
Oh, wow.
7
So, I moved to Italy because I was studying abroad during my junior year at university,
8
and so I was to do a immersion program at the University of Bologna
9
which means all of my classes were in Italian, all of my homework, all of my exams,
10
everything was completely in Italian and I also had to find my own housing
11
which was also the first time I found housing on my own
12
because I had always lived in the university dorms at my university in the United States And so,
13
yeah, to navigate, one, a new city,
14
a city in general, and then finding my first apartment and learning how to survive a new university system,
15
it was exhilarating and very exciting.
16
And, yeah, I loved it.
17
That's so cool.
18
So what was it like when you first got to Italy?
19
Did you have culture shock?
20
I mean, because you came from a small town environment and now you're living in a big city in Europe.
21
I think my friends would probably say that I was very quick to trust everyone.
22
As I mentioned before, growing up in a small town, I knew all my neighbors and I was very trusting of strangers and very welcoming.
23
And I still am.
24
But in hindsight, when I moved to Italy, I think I was maybe a little too naive sometimes.
25
And especially not knowing the language, it was easy to sort of put my trust or my faith in someone when I needed help,
26
because I needed help often, whether for translating or even just grocery shopping.
27
And so sometimes I think I look back and I'm like, oh, maybe I should have walked away a little bit sooner or something like that.
28
Yeah.
29
So, I mean, compare life in Italy to life in the States.
30
What was it like?
31
How was it different?
32
Life in Italy feels so much slower.
33
People are still very productive and they're very passionate and they go to their jobs and they go to work.
34
But there's just this sense of how important it is to enjoy your time
35
and to enjoy your time with family and with friends.
36
So, for example, I feel like in the United States, people, and this is very general,
37
but I feel like people have their jobs and they work really hard
38
and to the point where maybe they're so tired they go home
39
And they just want to watch Netflix or watch TV and relax.
40
And that's their way of relaxing is being at home.
41
And in Italy, it feels like the way people recharge
42
and the way that they relax
43
and get their energy back is being in the company of their friends and being in the company of their family.
44
So they'll finish work and everyone will meet up for a drink in the center of town.
45
And it's it's not to drink a lot.
46
It's really just to have a glass of wine, eat some delicious food and just sit and talk.
47
But about nothing, really.
48
Just enjoy the time.
49
And eventually people decide to go home, but it'll be hours later, even though they're exhausted from work.
50
But that's the that's how they relax
51
and that's how they get their energy back and they go to work the next day and are productive.
52
And I really enjoyed that the most.
53
I can relate to that.
54
I was in Spain for about two months just traveling around.
55
And the one thing that I still remember the most is
56
that I would go into a little pub or a bar late at night, 10 o 'clock at night, and there would be old people.
57
And I'm not talking like 50 or 60.
58
I'm talking like 75 years old maybe.
59
And they're well -dressed.
60
And they're sitting at a table with their friends and I could never imagine that happening in the United States.
61
And it was so impressive.
62
I was so impressed by that, that people really in the later years of their life still had that social spirit.
63
They go out, they socialize, they have a good time.
64
And we're talking late at night, like 10 o 'clock.
65
You would never see that in America, ever.
66
Yeah, I completely agree, and it's very similar in Italy too.
67
So what about the food?
68
I hear the food is fantastic.
69
Everyone, you know, raves about Italian food.
70
Yes, it is so good.
71
And I probably, wow, where to begin with food?
72
I love the cheeses.
73
There's just so many different kinds of cheese and I'm a huge.
74
cheese meat um jam person and so the combination of of having all of
75
that available in italy and especially the different regions are known for different foods
76
so sometimes you can't even eat a specific type of food unless you're in
77
that city and
78
or otherwise you'd have to pay a lot to get it
79
at a different part of this of this of the country
80
so yeah i i mean pizzas were delicious too i know it's stereotypical
81
but the pizzas were awesome and they're so different than the u .s they're
82
so thin super super thin there's no like deep dish pizza in italy
83
or or double crust or cheese filled crust
84
that doesn't exist exactly like it melts in your mouth right yeah yeah
85
and it's it's so delicious and pastas of course are great and their wines are delicious too and And,
86
yeah, I miss Italian food a lot, a lot.
87
Well, I am thinking of going there, so you'll have to give me some tips.
88
I would love to.

Who Will Love This Video?

This video is perfect for intermediate English learners aiming to boost their conversational skills. Whether you’re prepping for travel, want to sound more natural in discussions, or just love learning about culture, the dialogue between Chantal and her interviewer offers real-life insights. It’s ideal for speaking practice—you’ll hear casual, everyday language that mirrors how people actually talk, making it easy to mimic and remember.

Words & Idioms Worth Stealing

Here are 3 standout phrases to add to your toolkit:

  • "Rustic life": A simple, countryside lifestyle (e.g., "She grew up in a rustic town with no big stores").
  • "Exhilarating": Thrilling and exciting (e.g., "Moving to a new country was exhilarating but scary").
  • "Recharge": To regain energy (e.g., "Spending time with friends helps me recharge after work").

These words pop up in the conversation and are easy to use in your own language learning journey.

How to Nail the Pronunciation & Flow

The speaker’s tone is warm and conversational—great for pronunciation practice. Focus on two key areas: linking words (e.g., "sort of" becomes "sorta" in casual speech) and intonation when sharing stories (her voice rises with excitement when talking about Italy!). Try the shadowing technique: pause the video, repeat her lines immediately, and match her rhythm. Notice how she stresses words like "exhilarating" and "passionate" to emphasize emotion. This will make your speaking sound more natural and engaging.
