1
When I did this pronunciation test with some students, only 10% of them got all the phrases right.
2
How will you do?
3
Are you ready for the challenge?
4
Let's find out.
5
Hello, this is Keith and I run the website,
6
the Keith Speaking Academy, as well as the YouTube channel English Speaking Success and English Speaking Success Shorts.
7
Now, this test is for fun, right?
8
But pronunciation is hugely important.
9
I mean, you can have the best vocabulary in the world,
10
the most perfect grammar, but if people can't understand what you're saying, communication breaks down.
11
And what's more, in IELTS speaking, pronunciation counts for 25% of your score.
12
So it's a really important area to work on.
13
What's more, personally, I think bad pronunciation can cause a really bad first impression, right?
14
It's a bit like having scruffy hair or even food on your face.
15
So how do we fix this?
16
I mean, not the scruffy hair and the food, pronunciation.
17
Well, this test will help you see where your weaknesses are and what you need to focus on.
18
And so then you just need to start working on them.
19
Later, I'll tell you about a fantastic tool to help you with that.
20
It's a mobile app and it's called ELSA Speak.
21
It's a pronunciation app that basically lets you practice all different aspects of English pronunciation.
22
It then pinpoints your mistakes and gives you feedback so you can improve.
23
Brilliant.
24
More about that later.
25
By the way, there is a free PDF you can get with all of these phrases if you want to practice.
26
and also I have made a study set in ELSA so
27
that you can go to the app later and practice more and more.
28
All of the links down below in the video description.
29
Right now, let's get into the phrases.
30
Okay, getting into the test.
31
Right, so I'm going to show you 10 phrases with some challenging words.
32
I will show you first the phrase on the screen, then you can pronounce it,
33
and then listen to me as I will pronounce it and check if you were right.
34
I'll repeat it again and then ask you to repeat it so you can practise.
35
A few things to notice.
36
First of all, be aware I am using British pronunciation.
37
American pronunciation may have some variances.
38
Sometimes I will show those if they are noticeable with my best American accent.
39
Also notice that some of these phrases are natural, but some of them are not that natural.
40
I've kind of made them up to help practice specific sounds, okay?
41
And also we will start with some easy phrases, but it gets harder as we go along.
42
Okay, let's begin with the first one.
43
Okay, so the first phrase now is gonna be helping you practice the difference between I and E, right?
44
I and E.
45
Here's the phrase you try first.
46
And now listen, you can sit on this seat.
47
Let's try again.
48
You can sit on this seat.
49
Now you try.
50
Excellent.
51
Very, very good.
52
Number two.
53
In number two, we're gonna be practicing the difference between two diphthongs, which are ow and oh, right?
54
The diphthong is where it moves from one vowel sound to another.
55
It's kind of slides.
56
Oww, oh, two different sounds.
57
Here's the phrase.
58
Here we go.
59
Now I know how you knew.
60
Again, now I know how you knew.
61
You try.
62
Brilliant.
63
Number three, this is a very short phrase that looks at something we call consonant clusters or groups of consonants, right?
64
English often puts two or even three consonants together and they're quite difficult to get the sounds right.
65
So let's try this one.
66
You go first.
67
Okay, and listen, I like comfortable clothes.
68
Again, I like comfortable clothes. And now you try.
69
Okay, very difficult word is clothes.
70
It's the th and the s, clothes, right?
71
You have to have the th because otherwise it sounds like clothes, close the door, right?
72
Clothes.
73
Comfortable, we can say comfortable,
74
but normally the f just becomes comfortable the F and the T sound come together.
75
Comfortable, comfortable clothes.
76
Right, excellent, that's number three.
77
Let's see how you do with number four.
78
Phrase number four looks at two words which are often confused because the spelling is quite similar, right?
79
Let's see how you do.
80
and listen, I need a receipt for this recipe book.
81
And again, I need a receipt for this recipe book. And you repeat.
82
Right, moving on to number five.
83
Number five looks at words that have a silent letter.
84
I know, English spelling is so strange, right?
85
We have letters that we just don't pronounce sometimes.
86
Let's see if you can spot them and pronounce this phrase.
87
It's quite long, getting harder, right?
88
Try your best.
89
Okay, and listen.
90
There is a subtle difference between the schedules on Wednesday and Tuesday.
91
Again, there is a subtle difference between the schedules on Wednesday and Tuesday.
92
You try.
93
Right, so notice the word subtle, we don't pronounce the B, subtle.
94
Wednesday, we don't pronounce the D, Wednesday.
95
Schedules is an interesting word.
96
And I do know in America, they pronounce it schedules.
97
So if you said schedules, that's fine.
98
If you prefer British English, we would say schedules.
99
And also Tuesday, I think if I remember rightly, in some American states, they say Tuesday.
100
I remember the Sopranos and there was a scene where the guy, the gangster was going, you've got to go on Tuesday, man, go on Tuesday.
101
And I think it was a Tuesday.
102
If anybody's from New York, please do correct me if I'm not right, but I think you can say that.
103
Right, let's take a little break because the next phrase is six to 10, really up the ante, push up the challenge.
104
You're gonna need all the energy you've got.
105
You'll need to be full of beans to do that part well.
106
Come with me to the water cooler, right?
107
Let's get a little something to drink.
108
I've got something really important to tell you.
109
Come on.
110
Hi, come in.
111
Yeah, come and have a seat.
112
Sit on this seat.
113
How are you feeling?
114
Right?
115
Would you like a tea or coffee?
116
Yeah, maybe you need something a little bit stronger after all of that pronunciation, right? Who knows?
117
Listen, I hope this test is helping you see where you need to focus, right?
118
But I guess the really important question is, how can I improve my pronunciation?
119
It's actually quite simple.
120
All you need is feedback and practice.
121
It's as simple as that.
122
And I'd like to show you that mobile app I mentioned earlier, ELSA Speak, because it's perfect for this.
123
It's got really high tech voice recognition and artificial intelligence
124
that really helps give accurate and detailed feedback on all the sounds and different aspects of of pronunciation that you're making.
125
What you've got in the app, basically there's a wide range of topics you can look at and practice in.
126
You've got a whole section on IELTS practice.
127
So you can practice part one, part two, and part three.
128
And that includes vocabulary, collocations, model answers, indeed whole conversations like this in part three,
129
where you're practicing the different parts of your answer to get your pronunciation spot on, right?
130
Also, you've got study sets where students are sharing different phrases that they've been practicing.
131
I have the study set about the phrases from today's video, which you can get through the link down below.
132
More about that later, but I'd like to show you actually how this mobile app works
133
and the kind of feedback that you can get.
134
Let's have a look at an example.
135
So when we go in, we can have a look right at mixed skills,
136
ending sounds, different phonemes, such as the S and the SH and the Z.
137
Let's have a look.
138
When you go in, you can see some videos that can help you work out those sounds.
139
Then you get into the practice, right?
140
Let's take one of the lessons and see how it works.
141
So, the sun, for example.
142
The sun's finally coming out.
143
So you can see, you get to see the phrase, you get to hear an example, and then you press record and you repeat it.
144
Let's see what happens if I don't get the right pronunciation.
145
The sun finally coming out.
146
Now you can see here, it identifies the sound that's not right, the suns.
147
And it tells me, pronounce the S here with a Z sound, as in zero and buzz.
148
Let's try again then.
149
The sun's finally coming out.
150
And there we get it.
151
We get the feedback, smiley face, and it compares you to a native speaker, how close you're getting.
152
So you can see hugely effective, very valuable feedback.
153
You can get even more advanced and detailed feedback if you like, but it's a very powerful tool and one that I really think will help you with your pronunciation.
154
And Elsa are offering a very special offer to all of my students.
155
That's you, right?
156
You can get 30% discount on a one-year membership and 80% discount,
157
yes, eight zero, 80% discount on the lifetime membership.
158
And then you've got the tool, the app, for your whole life.
159
You can be practicing all the time.
160
Fantastic.
161
Great.
162
Go and check out the links below.
163
You can download the app and start practicing today.
164
Right now, let's get back to part two of the pronunciation test.
165
Right.
166
Now that you're all refreshed and ready to go, let's go with number six.
167
This one again is looking at consonant groups, in particular the s-k-s-s-k-s sound.
168
Here's the phrase, have a go.
169
And listen, he always asks about specific tasks.
170
One more time.
171
He always asks about specific tasks. And you try.
172
Very good, right?
173
This is quite a complicated sound.
174
Asks, tasks.
175
Tasks.
176
Lots of words like that, so it's a useful one to get really, really right.
177
Another challenging word is specific.
178
It's got the s, s, c, specific.
179
Great, let's move on to the next one.
180
And this phrase is gonna look at the s and sh sound, right?
181
The s and the sh.
182
S, sh. Have a go.
183
Right, and listen.
184
Listen.
185
She says sociable people love society. And again.
186
She says sociable people love society. And you try.
187
Fantastic, right?
188
So you've got the she says, notice says becomes says.
189
And this is the difficult one, sociable, s-sh, sociable.
190
But society, s-s, society.
191
Nice one.
192
So here we are then, number eight, have a go.
193
And listen, many women are enthusiastic entrepreneurs.
194
And again, many women are enthusiastic entrepreneurs. And you.
195
Lovely, right?
196
Now, I think there's three difficult words here.
197
First is women, because a lot of students confuse woman,
198
one, with women in the plural, women, right?
199
Enthusiastic has the Nth sound, enthusiastic.
200
Enthusiastic.
201
And then this word is probably, it's such a popular word nowadays, and it comes from French.
202
We pronounce it in a British way, but it's entrepreneur.
203
Think of the four sounds, on, tr, like train, tr,
204
pr, like prize, ner, like ner, entrepreneur, entrepreneur.
205
Lovely.
206
Okay, number nine.
207
Now, number nine is getting complicated.
208
This one is quite long.
209
Try your best.
210
And listen, I'm not exaggerating the expected extinction of the black rhino.
211
And again, I'm not exaggerating the expected extinction of the black rhino. And you?
212
So the three tricky words here are exaggerating.
213
that sound in exaggerating is like eggs, right?
214
Eggs, as in fried eggs, sunny side up eggs, right?
215
Eggs, exaggerating.
216
But the other two words, it's a x, it's a cus, x, expected, extinction.
217
How are you doing?
218
We're almost there.
219
Let's move on.
220
Phrase number 10.
221
Phrase number 10 looks at once more at two different vowel sounds, which are often confused because they don't exist in a lot of languages.
222
We've got or and er. Have a go.
223
Okay, have a listen.
224
Walk and work are the weirdest words in the world.
225
One more time.
226
Walk and work are the weirdest words in the world. And you go.
227
Excellent, right?
228
You can see from the shape of the mouth, the walk, walk and work.
229
How do I mind work?
230
I don't know.
231
And word, weird, word.
232
And word and world are almost the same, but you've got the L, right?
233
Word, world.
234
Excellent, great.
235
Well, brilliant.
236
Now, some of you who've done very, very, very well, maybe thinking, I want more.
237
Well, I've got a spicy bonus for you, right?
238
Because there's one sound I haven't really covered, which is one of the most challenging out there.
239
It's the th and the the and the O-U-G-H.
240
When you're looking at that word, how do you pronounce O-U-G-H?
241
Okay, here's a bonus phrase for you.
242
Let's see how you do.
243
Right, and listen.
244
Although he thought he was thorough throughout, he went through it too quickly. And again.
245
Although he thought he was thorough throughout,
246
He went through it too quickly. And you go.
247
Wow, that was one of the most challenging, right?
248
Although, with a the, although, meaning but.
249
He thought with a th, thorough.
250
throughout, through, right?
251
All those three have got the th sound.
252
Well, listen, well done.
253
So how did you do?
254
Well, listen, a big congratulations for completing the test.
255
And I hoped it helped you, right?
256
Listen, the next step for you, right, is to download the mobile app ELSA.
257
There's a link down below.
258

Về Bài Học Này

Bạn đang luyện tập phát âm tiếng Anh với video "Can You Pass This English PRONUNCIATION Test?" bằng phương pháp Shadowing — kỹ thuật được Dr. Alexander Arguelles phổ biến rộng rãi.
