1
Most students spend years studying English, but many don't practice speaking English,
2
either because they don't know how or they have no one to practice with.
3
So today, I'm going to show you a simple 10-minute fluency routine
4
that you can do on your own at home to become more fluent in English.
5
Hello, it's Keith from the Keith Speaking Academy, here to help you speak English more fluently.
6
Now then, many teachers will tell you to be more fluent, just practice more.
7
Yes, but how?
8
You see, the truth is, you are not fluent in English, maybe because you're speaking English word by word.
9
And when you speak English word by word, it takes longer to process and you speak more slowly.
10
What native speakers and proficient speakers of English do is we speak in chunks, groups of words.
11
And when you speak in chunks, then you're processing more quickly, you can speak more fluently.
12
So in today's video, I'm going to show you some common chunks with simple examples you can start practicing with.
13
and at the end of the video, a simple 10-minute fluency routine using this chunking method.
14
Are you ready?
15
Let's begin.
16
So, as I mentioned, chunks are groups of words, two or three words that we say together as one sound.
17
There are many kinds of chunks.
18
There are grammatical chunks, lexical or vocabulary chunks, opinion chunks, frequency chunks.
19
For example, let's take some grammar chunks, okay?
20
Word by word, we've got I would like to.
21
Chunking, I'd like to.
22
I'd like to help.
23
I am looking forward to chunking.
24
I'm looking forward to.
25
I'm looking forward to coming.
26
Or better, I'm looking forward to going.
27
You can repeat these with me.
28
I can't help.
29
I can't help smiling.
30
You hear its one sound.
31
You should have.
32
You should have told me.
33
And notice with grammar chunks, be careful if the word coming after is a noun or a verb.
34
And if it's a verb, is it the infinitive or the turund?
35
Vocabulary chunks, there are many, for example, word by word, to go for a something.
36
Chunking, to go for a walk,
37
to go for a run. To have a shower.
38
To have a shower. to have a wash.
39
Chunking is like one sound.
40
Frequency chunks.
41
From time to time.
42
But chunking from time to time.
43
Without fail.
44
Now and then.
45
Now and then.
46
Every once in a while.
47
Okay?
48
So you can see with these chunks, once you start speaking and thinking in chunks like sounds,
49
these chunks act as building blocks.
50
And if you're speaking in this way, you're going to be processing more quickly and you're going to be speaking more quickly, but more fluently as well.
51
If you practice these over time, you'll get better and better.
52
Now, repeating is okay, but it's not enough.
53
Let's look at a more complete fluency routine you can do every day.
54
Okay, the 10-minute fluency drill, there are two parts.
55
There's the drill practice and the real practice.
56
The drill practice is like if you're a footballer and you're down the gym and you're training,
57
doing repetitions, repeat, repeat, repeat, that's the drill practice.
58
The real practice is like doing the sport, playing the game, playing football for real.
59
Okay?
60
So you've got two parts.
61
Let's look at the drill practice first.
62
And in the drill practice, there are four things.
63
Repeat the chunk.
64
Make a phrase.
65
Repeat the phrase several times.
66
Change something in the phrase.
67
Let me show you this with three different chunks.
68
Okay.
69
First of all, let's take I'd like to.
70
That's the chunk, right?
71
Word by word, I would like to.
72
Chunking, I'd like to.
73
Make a phrase.
74
I'd like to learn.
75
I'd like to learn Spanish.
76
Repeat several times.
77
I'd like to learn Spanish.
78
I'd like to learn Spanish.
79
Change something.
80
We could change the noun.
81
I'd like to learn Japanese.
82
I'd like to learn Arabic.
83
Just changing something, okay?
84
So, we can change the noun.
85
Let's take another chunk.
86
I am looking forward to...
87
chunking.
88
I'm looking forward to...
89
I'm looking forward to having dinner.
90
So, we repeat several times.
91
I'm looking forward to having dinner.
92
I'm looking forward to having dinner.
93
Changing something, we can change the verb.
94
I'm looking forward to preparing dinner.
95
I'm looking forward to eating dinner.
96
I'm looking forward to enjoying dinner.
97
Got it?
98
Great.
99
A third chunk, let's take a vocabulary chunk, to go for a.
100
I go for a walk i go for a walk repeat
101
i go for a walk i go for a i go for a walk
102
we could change the verb we could change the vocabulary let's change the person
103
i go for a walk my dad goes for a walk my wife sometimes goes for a walk So,
104
we're changing the person.
105
Notice you're also using the grammar, changing go to goes.
106
So, we can change the verb.
107
You can change the tense.
108
You can change the noun, the verb, the tense, the person, anything.
109
It's all fluency practice.
110
Got it?
111
Let's look then at the second part.
112
That's the drill practice.
113
Let's look at the real practice.
114
Okay, next real practice.
115
And basically here we are combining chunks to make meaningful sentences.
116
Okay, often two chunks, maybe more.
117
For example, I'd like to go for a walk.
118
I'd like to go for a walk.
119
Something like that.
120
Now the tip is you want to look for natural combinations.
121
For example, grammar and vocabulary chunks are a very natural combination right?
122
I'm looking forward to going for a walk.
123
I can't wait to learn Japanese.
124
I can't wait to learn Spanish.
125
You should have gone for a walk because now it's raining.
126
Okay?
127
So we're combining chunks to make simple but meaningful sentences.
128
Another common combination is activity and frequency.
129
I go for a walk from time to time.
130
I go for a walk every morning without fail.
131
Okay, remember as you're doing this focus on the chunk.
132
I go for a walk every morning without fail.
133
It's that sound not word by word.
134
Adverbs and habit.
135
By and large, I go for a walk in the mornings.
136
Again, very common combinations.
137
Next, you can also make little stories.
138
It's just putting the sentences together to make a story.
139
Don't make a good story.
140
It can be a stupid, illogical story, but you're just practicing, okay?
141
It might look a little bit like this.
142
I'd like to go for a walk.
143
Actually, I'm looking forward to going for a walk.
144
I've been looking forward to it for hours.
145
By and large, I go for a walk in the mornings.
146
However, today, I'll go for a walk in the afternoon.
147
Hey, not bad.
148
A final tip here.
149
Record yourself doing it.
150
Video, audio recording, but do that.
151
Listen back and see if you can feel the chunks and how you can improve.
152
Okay, let's move on.
153
So summarising this is your 10 minute fluency routine.
154
Repeat the chunk.
155
Make a phrase.
156
Repeat it several times.
157
Change something.
158
The noun, the verb, the person.
159
Combine two chunks.
160
Create a mini story.
161
And this is your routine.
162
10 minutes every day, you're going to build up your fluency in no time.
163
To practice more, I do have a PDF, which you can go and download.
164
With this, there are common chunks from common situations, for example, at work, at home, socializing.
165
Just be careful.
166
You know I'm not a big fan of word lists
167
and I don't recommend you get a big list of chunks and just go through them.
168
Just choose two or three from a particular topic or situation and practice them.
169
And then practicing on your own is great.
170
practicing in real life with real people is also really, really good, right?
171
So do that in your real life.
172
If you don't have a chance to speak to other people, come and join me.
173
Come and join the IELTS Speaking Gold course.
174
Not only do we have a self-study course full of language grammar vocabulary for IELTS, but also live lessons, Zoom meetings,
175
breakout rooms, speaking practice rooms where you get to practice with real people around the world on the course.
176
And that is really going to level up your fluency.
177
If you're not preparing for IELTS, I have something for you.
178
Coming soon, the Speaking Fluency Club.
179
This is brand new, coming in a few weeks.
180
The Speaking Fluency Club is aimed at upper intermediate advanced level students.
181
It's not a course.
182
It's a club.
183
We'll have live lessons, Zoom meetings
184
and speaking practice rooms where you will get a chance to actually practice speaking with other students at that level.
185
So it's aimed at the higher level, upper intermediate B2, advanced C1 levels.
186
It's coming soon.
187
So keep your eyes open.
188
In the meantime, nice chunk.
189

191
Take care.
192

194
All right, then.
195
Take care now.
196
Bye-bye.
197
Thank you.

Về Bài Học Này

Bạn đang luyện tập phát âm tiếng Anh với video "Fluency in 10 Minutes a Day" bằng phương pháp Shadowing — kỹ thuật được Dr. Alexander Arguelles phổ biến rộng rãi.
