What is choking?

Choking means something such as food or an object has gotten stuck in the airway, preventing air from getting into the child's lungs.

Choking may be mild or severe.

Mild choking means that the child can cough and make sounds.

If the child is coughing, let them cough.

They're trying to get the object out.

If you're worried at any time about the child's breathing, do not hesitate to call 9-1-1.

Severe choking means the airway is completely blocked.

The child may make the choking sign, such as holding his neck with his hand, one or both hands.

In severe choking, the child is not able to breathe, to cough, or to speak.

Your quick response to choking can save your child's life.

You will need to get the object out so the child can breathe.
