Imagine that you knew, you knew for an absolute fact
Hãy tưởng tượng rằng bạn biết, bạn biết chắc chắn như một sự thật tuyệt đối.
2
that Jesus was coming back before this day will come to an end.
3
That would be amazing, of course, and of course that would also be impossible, impossible to know.
4
We can't know the date or the time of Christ's return, but what if we did?
5
What if we knew he was coming back at 10 p.m sharp local time tonight?
6
How would that change your day?
7
Today on Ask Pastor John, if Jesus returns tonight.
8
We are about to read Luke 12, verses 35 to 48, and we just read 1 Thessalonians 5, so we are thinking a lot right now about Christ's return in our Bible readings.
9
The question today is from Claire, a young woman and listener to the podcast.
10
Pastor John, hello and thank you for APJ.
Mục sư John, xin chào và cảm ơn bạn về APJ.
11
This podcast is a constant stream of encouragement for my soul and of correction too in the right balance.
12
Wonderful.
13
Thank you for both kinds of precious gift to me.
14
Jesus repeatedly calls his followers to live with watchful expectation for his return.
15
In Luke 12, verses 35 to 48, he says, Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning
16
and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home.
17
He praises the servant who is found ready, faithful, and active when the master arrives at night.
18
Obviously, we need physical rest every night, So it's not a literal staying always awake all night.
19
Metaphorically, though, how should I be living today as if I truly believe Christ could return tonight?
20
What does staying dressed with lamps lit look like today?
21
It's amazing to me.
22
Remarkable how thoroughly the New Testament answers this question.
23
I mean, just thinking about it was good for me.
24
So let me see
25
if I can pack into this little episode 10 transforming ways
26
to live as we eagerly look forward to the coming of Jesus.
27
So here's number one.
28
Let's start with that word eagerly.
29
Hebrews 9.28.
30
Christ will appear a second time to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.
31
And 2 Timothy 4.8.
32
The Lord will award a crown of righteousness to all who have loved his appearing.
33
So as we wait, we cultivate a heart of love and eagerness for the Lord's appearing.
34
That's number one.
35
Second, be alert, but not alarmed.
36
Matthew 24, 42.
37
Stay awake.
38
Luke 12, 40. Be ready.
39
Luke 21, 40, 36. Be vigilant.
40
Mark 13, 23, be on guard.
41
Luke 21, 34, watch yourselves.
42
So all that's be alert.
43
The point of all those texts is not that we don't sleep physically, but that we don't sleep spiritually or morally.
44
We maintain a vital living relationship with Jesus and alertness to how we can serve him.
45
But alertness does not mean alarm, because Matthew 24, 6 says,
46
When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, see to it that you are not alarmed.
47
We're not to be nervous and fearful.
48
Third, be joyfully patient, no matter what sufferings are required of us in the last days.
49
James 5, 7.
50
Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord.
51
And Peter adds, do it with joy.
52
1 Peter 4, 12.
53
Do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal
54
that comes upon you to test you as though something strange were happening to you
55
but rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.
56
Rejoice in suffering now, so that you will know the fullness of joy at his coming.
57
Fourth, keep yourselves pure.
58
1 John 3, 2.
59
Beloved, we know that when he appears, We should be like him because we'll see him as he is.
60
Everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.
61
And 2 Peter 3.11, since all these things are thus to be dissolved,
62
what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness?
63
Fifth, be gentle and reasonable.
64
That may sound like an odd priority in anticipating the second coming, but listen to Philippians 4-5.
65
Let your gentleness, and I know the ESV translates it reasonableness, but I've studied that word in all of its contexts,
66
and I still can't help but think that the old translation gentleness is better.
67
I think it's okay to go both ways,
68
but I think gentleness, because it's parallel with not being pugilistic in some places, is better.
69
Let your gentleness be known to everyone.
70
The Lord is at hand.
71
How easy it is to become quick-tempered and harsh in times of crisis.
72
Oh, my goodness, we see that.
73
Don't let it happen.
74
Six.
75
Don't be deceived by powerful pretenders.
76
In other words, watch.
77
Don't give in to deception.
78
Matthew 24, 4.
79
See that no one leads you astray.
80
For many will come in my name saying, I am the Christ.
81
And they will lead many astray.
82
This is one of the reasons we need to be alert
83
and vigilant over our minds and hearts to protect us from deception, which will be so rampant in that last time.
84
Seventh, don't give in to hysteria.
85
Go to work.
86
You got a job, do it.
87
In Paul's day in Thessalonica, they were giving way to hysteria and quitting their jobs.
88
What's the point of working, they're saying.
89
The Lord is near.
90
Why work?
91
We don't need any money.
92
Paul tells them to stop being like that, stop being alarmed, go back to work.
93
Here's what he says.
94
We hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busy bodies.
95
2 Thessalonians 3.11.
96
This is basically what Jesus was getting at when he said in Luke 12.42, Who then is the faithful
97
and wise manager whom his master set over his household to give them their food at the proper time?
98
Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes.
99
Love that.
100
When I was a preaching pastor, that was my rock solid assignment.
101
You've been set over a household.
102
You've got food to give them.
103
Give them that every Sunday, and you're going to be blessed if the Lord breaks in, splits the clouds, and finds you studying for your sermon.
104
I want to be found doing what God has given me to do when he comes.
105
That's what Jesus expects.
106
Eighth, go to church.
107
Hebrews 10, 24.
108
Have you ever noticed the connection between the second coming and going to church?
109
let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works not neglecting to meet together
110
as is the habit of some but encouraging one another
111
and all the more go to church all the more as
112
you see the day drawing near meet together more as you
113
see the Lord's coming approaching don't curl up in your chair at home go to church Ninth,
114
give yourselves to regular earnest prayer, even prayer for the second coming, fasting for the second coming.
115
Even Jesus said, you can't fast when the bridegroom is here, but the bridegroom is going to be taken away, and then you'll fast.
116
Why?
117
Because you want him back.
118
Luke 21, 36, stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things
119
that are going to take place and stand before the Son of Man.
120
1 Peter 4, 7, the end of all things is at hand.
121
Therefore, be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.
122
So pray to him day and night.
123
He will not delay long over you and will vindicate you in your prayers.
124
Finally, 10th, hasten the day of God by finishing the Great Commission.
125
2 Peter 3.12 says, We are waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God.
126
Now, how do you hasten a day that the Lord has fixed with his own authority?
127
And I think two passages point to the answer.
128
Acts chapter 1, verses 6 to 8.
129
where the disciples asked Jesus after the resurrection, is it now time for you to establish the kingdom?
130
And Jesus said, it is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority,
131
but you will receive power.
132
You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you
133
and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.
134
In other words, if you want to see the kingdom arrive, finish the mission, which is what Matthew 24, 14 says.
135
This gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.
136
So how do you hasten the day of the Lord?
137
We give ourselves to finishing the Great Commission.
138
So let me end where I began.
139
May the Lord give us eagerness and love for his second coming.
140
The Lord will give a crown of righteousness to all who have loved his appearing.
141
Yeah, amen.
142
There's this glorious task.
143
We don't quit our job just yet.
144
We don't stare off into the sky.
145
We don't give in to hysteria.
146
We don't give up to idleness.
147
We cultivate a heart of eager love for his appearing with busy hands working the tasks in front of us to do.
148
It's about everyday faithfulness right up until the clouds split apart.
149
Until then, let your gentleness be known to everyone.
150
The Lord is at hand.
151
That's an amazing text.
152
I'm going to be thinking about that today.
153
Let your gentleness be known to everyone.
154
The Lord is at hand.
155

160
when christ is coming back it could be in a century
161
or two centuries and that means we still have to wake up to alarms We still have to find jobs.
162
We still have to make money.
163
We still have to pay the bills.
164
And that means we will go on facing the temptations of money fears.
