1
In our worst moments in couples, we tend to assume that our problems are unfixable, that we simply don't get on, that we're the wrong sort of people to be together.
2
What we tend not to do is imagine that we have a problem of dictionaries, that our fundamental problem is that our partner and ourselves are,
3
beneath the surface, following dictionary definitions that don't align.
4
We're squabbling because we don't understand what the same things mean for each one of us,
5
because we're using the same words and terms without realizing that each of us has an entirely different understanding of their natures.
6
We imagine, as we try to live with someone else, that there isn't a gap in the way that we both define concepts like, for example, delays in answering a message,
7
or leaving the bathroom messy, or spending time with friends.
8
It simply doesn't occur to us, who have been wielding certain phrases and concepts one way since early adolescence,
9
that we might have encountered someone who sees them very differently.
10

11
who is vicious, unkind, uncaring and out to harm us.
12
It's totally natural, as natural as our understanding of the word chair or glass, class, that spending time with friends means a chance to rejuvenate,
13
to take the pressure off a couple and achieve some necessary distance before returning to coziness once more.
14
What we're forgetting in all this is the noble and arcane discipline of etymology,
15
that is, the history and genealogy of language.
16
It's the people we call etymologists who will carefully trace where a given word comes from.
17
They will tell us, for example, that window comes from the old Norse word vindauga,
18
meaning wind-eye, or that clue comes from the Greek clothos, meaning ball of thread, after that thread that Ariadne gave Theseus to escape the labyrinth.
19
Standard etymology is all very well, but what we need, as much if not more of, is a form of emotional etymology,
20
that is, an effort to trace back words and terms to their sources in the lives of lovers.
21
Couples need to see that they're fighting very often simply because they are using the same terms in different ways.
22
A habit of leaving a bathroom in a mess may not, in fact, in one's own dictionary, stem from any kind of desire to harm.
23
Maybe it just emerged from a wish to escape a punishing parental figure, who while emotionally very cold, placed undue and unwelcome emphasis on etiquette and order.
24
Just as in a neighbouring dictionary, the very same phrase might stand for shallowness and selfishness, for imitating the behaviour of a despised stepparent.
25
It might be an emblem of disdain and cruelty.
26
All this points to what we should do in our arguments.
27
Before we imagine what our partner means, before we settle on an explanation that involves insult and a desire to harm,
28
we should always take care to remember dictionaries.

本片段的口语练习目标

通过影子跟读(shadow speak)提升对情感类话题的表达流畅度,掌握如何清晰阐述抽象概念(如“情感词源”),并学会在对话中自然嵌入逻辑分析。适合突破“观点表达不深刻”的流利度瓶颈,尤其有助于提升英语议论文的口语表达能力。

实用短语库

  • fundamental problem(根本问题)
  • align with(与……一致)
  • squabble over(因……争吵)
  • self-evident(不言而喻的)
  • trace back to(追溯到)
  • stem from(源于)
  • take the pressure off(缓解压力)

攻克薄弱环节

重点练习长句的节奏把控,如“Couples need to see that they're fighting very often simply because they are using the same terms in different ways”,注意从句间的停顿和重音(如“simply because”)。
