1
Hello, I'm AJ Hogue, the Director of Effortless English.
2
Today I want to talk about using your body while learning English.
3
When you use your body while learning, you will actually learn faster and remember longer.
4
This is especially useful for learning vocabulary, new words and phrases.
5
So let me tell you exactly how you can use your body to remember vocabulary longer,
6
to learn it more deeply, to remember it forever.
7
Here's what you need to do.
8
Whenever you find a new difficult word or phrase,
9
phrases are better, you need to make some kind of physical gesture
10
or expression on your face something physical a physical movement
11
that is connected to the meaning of the new word or the new phrase
12
Then, every time you hear that new word or phrase, you do the movement.
13
I'll give you an example in a minute.
14
I'll show you how to do this.
15
So, for example, when you listen to my vocabulary lessons, every time you hear that word, you make the same movement.
16
When you listen to the mini -story lessons, every time you hear that word, you make the same movement.
17
And by doing this, making the same movement every time with this new word or new phrase,
18
you get the meaning deeper, deeper, deeper into your brain.
19
You learn the new vocabulary much faster.
20
You remember it longer, and you will use it more quickly and more easily.
21
So let me give you a simple example.
22
For example, the word loathe. To loathe.
23
Okay? To loathe.
24
For example, a phrase, he loathes ice cream.
25
Now, to loathe means to hate, to really, really hate something.
26
So he loathes ice cream means he hates ice cream.
27
He really hates ice cream.
28
So you need to think of a movement, right?
29
This is a new word for you, maybe, for example
30
if it's a new word you need to make some movement connected to the meaning
31
so it can be anything anything that helps you remember
32
so for example i will use my face so we'll say to loathe
33
so i want to make my face look like hate like
34
so maybe like this right this movement this to me means to loathe to hate he loathes ice cream
35
so you want the movement to be exaggerated
36
it should be a big movement it should be maybe even a crazy movement because you will remember it better
37
so for this example loath so every time i say loath you do the same movement
38
so we practice this and you can do this at home
39
when you find a new word make your movement then practice it say the word
40
and do the movement
41
so loathe loathe loathe loathe loathe okay
42
i know it's crazy
43
but it's fine believe me this will help i promise
44
you there's a lot of research about this this will help you learn faster remember longer
45
and actually use the vocabulary better now it's better
46
if we use a phrase
47
so let's use the whole phrase he loathes ice cream for example
48
so ice cream we could make a movement let's say we're holding ice cream
49
and we're licking it you know right so imagine ice cream cone
50
so we would say he loathes ice cream right something like that
51
He loathes ice cream.
52
This gives us the movement in our body to show the meaning of the phrase.
53
So we're pretending we have ice cream, we pretend to lick it, and then we pretend to loathe it.
54
So when we hear the word, we do the action.
55
He loathes, and then we do ice cream, pretend to lick it, and then we do loathe again.
56
He loathes ice cream.
57
so again in the beginning the first step we just repeat
58
this several times it gets it into our bodies into our brains so we say he loathes ice cream he loathes
59
ice cream.
60
One more time.
61
He loathes ice cream.
62
Okay, you can do any action.
63
If you don't like my action, make your own action.
64
Just be sure the action and the meaning are connected in your mind.
65
So we do this again and again.
66
Now, every time you listen to the vocabulary lesson, if I'm talking and I say the word loathe,
67
immediately you do the action.
68
When you listen to the mini story lessons, if you hear the word loathe, immediately you do the action.
69
You do the same action every time you hear that word in an article,
70
in a movie, in a vocabulary lesson, in a mini story lesson in a point of view lesson always do
71
that action very strong when you hear the new word or phrase so i say loathe immediately you do that loathe loathe
72
every time so you can say the word yourself
73
and do the action and then listen to lessons or articles
74
that have the word or the phrase
75
and every time you hear it do the action
76
when you do this every time you train your body you teach your body
77
and your mind the meaning of the word not just in your head
78
but deep in your body it means it's subconscious you learn it more deeply
79
you'll remember it very long time a very long time
80
and you will be able to use it much faster and more automatically.
81
All right, so please do this.
82
Do this with all your new vocabulary.
83
I will see you next time.
84
Bye -bye.
