1
Welcome to today's lesson!
2
It's all about telling time.
3
Two o'clock, half past four, 6.30, quarter to nine, 2100, noon.
4
What?!
5
I'm Arnel from Arnel's Everyday English and today you will become super confident in telling time in English.
6
Here I have a clock.
7
Remember this is a clock and this is a watch.
8
Remember there's a difference.
9
What time is it?
10
It's one o'clock.
11
What time is it?
12
It's two o'clock.
13
What time is it?
14
It's three o'clock.
15
What time is it?
16
It's four o'clock.
17
You get the idea.
18
In English when we speak about the time we always say it is.
19
Contracted it's.
20
It's five o'clock, it's six o'clock,
21
it's seven o'clock, it's twelve o'clock.
22
If you need to be very specific, we can say a.m and p.m.
23
But normally when you're speaking, it's obvious.
24
Okay, Arnel, I need you here tomorrow at 6.
25
6?
26
Perfect!
27
See you tomorrow!
28
6 a.m.
29
A.m?
30
12 o'clock.
31
It's time for lunch.
32
Maybe not in your country,
33
but in the USA and in the UK 12 o'clock is lunchtime.
34
We can also say noon.
35
12 o'clock in the afternoon is noon.
36
I'll see you tomorrow at noon.
37
What time is it?
38
12 o'clock.
39
It's midnight.
40
I went to bed at midnight.
41
Let's get more specific.
42
We have a very simple way, there's also a more confusing way,
43
but actually this is very easy.
44
Let's go through both step by step.
45
I have my clock.
46
I'm going to use a digital clock here.
47
Now it's 1 0 5.
48
We pronounce the zero oh now it's 110
49
now it's 115 it's 120 it's 145 you can always read the time from left to right with every time.
50
It's 820.
51
It's 730.
52
It's 422.
53
It's 1010.
54
It's 355.
55
But of course, there's another way.
56
Let's take a look.
57
I have my clock.
58
This part is past.
59
This part is two.
60
Now let's have the hour hand at one.
61
It's five past one.
62
Ten past one.
63
It's quarter past one.
64
15 is always quarter past.
65
It's 20 past one.
66
It's 25 past one.
67
It's half past one.
68
30 is always half past.
69
Let's continue.
70
It's 25 to 2.
71
It's 20 to 2.
72
It's quarter to 2.
73
45 is always quarter 2.
74
It's 10 to 2.
75
It's 5 to 2.
76
Now it's 2.
77
Always remember quarter past, half past, quarter 2.
78
Now it's 2.28.
79
Is it really necessary to be so specific?
80
Usually no. It's around 2.30.
81
It's around half past two.
82
Whenever we're telling time you could always use around to give a general period.
83
I'll see you tomorrow around nine.
84
This could mean ten to nine.
85
This could mean 10 past 9.
86
Around 9. At.
87
Of course, when we tell the time we say it is,
88
now it is 2, now it is 4,
89
but we use at when we want to say when an activity starts or ends.
90
My English lesson starts at 9 in the morning.
91
It finishes at 11 in the morning.
92
Many of our phones, computers,
93
schedules etc. use the 24-hour clock.
94
But in English, for example, we would only say 3 o'clock.
95
We wouldn't say 15 o'clock, 16 o'clock.
96
3 o'clock, 4 o'clock, that's normal.
97
Really only in a military type situation would you read out the numbers.
98
2100. Oh 100.
99
What time is it?
100
Do you have the time?
101
These are two different ways to ask for the time.
102
We do not say, how late is it?
103
Arnel, How late is it?
104
You have been fantastic!
105
In the comments below, tell me what time it is!
106
I want to know when you watch this video.

Thank you.

Deine praktische Phrasen-Sammlung

  • Fragen: "What time is it?" (Wie spät ist es?), "Do you have the time?" (Hast du die Uhrzeit?)
  • Einzele Uhrzeiten: "It's one o'clock" (Es ist ein Uhr), "half past four" (halb fünf), "quarter to nine" (viertel vor neun), "noon" (Mittag), "midnight" (Mitternacht)
  • Ungenauigkeiten: "around nine" (um neun Uhr herum), "about half past two" (ungefähr halb drei)
  • Termine: "My lesson starts at nine" (Meine Stunde fängt um neun an), "I'll see you at noon" (Ich sehe dich um Mittag)
