1
In this video we are going to learn about turtles, but before we dive into these turtle facts, let's cover the basics.
2
Turtles are cute animals that are famous for their protective hard shells and their slow movements.
3
Hey, do you already know what type of animal a turtle is?
4
What type of animal is a turtle?
5
Turtles are a type of animal called reptiles.
6
Turtles are reptiles.
7
Wow, so what does that mean?
8
Well here are a couple of things about reptiles.
9
They breathe air, they are cold blooded, and they are vertebrates, meaning they have a backbone.
10
Breathing air is easy to understand, right?
11
Can you take a breath right now?
12
Uh-huh, right now.
13
Yeah, you breathe air too, just like turtles and all of the other reptiles.
14
Even sea turtles breathe air.
15
That's right, so fascinating.
16
This sea turtle is grabbing a quick breath of air before going back in the water.
17
Earlier, we also mentioned that turtles and all of the other reptiles are cold-blooded.
18
What does it mean to be cold-blooded?
19
Well, being cold-blooded means turtles don't keep the temperature of their bodies the same.
20
Their environment changes the temperature of their bodies.
21
Unlike turtles and other reptiles, we are warm blooded.
22
That means our bodies warm themselves and keep our temperature about the same all of the time, even when we're out in the cold.
23
If you check the temperature of a turtle, it can be all over the place depending on where the turtle is,
24
because a turtle, just like all other reptiles, is cold blooded.
25
We also mentioned that just like other reptiles, turtles are vertebrates.
26
They have a backbone.
27
Next time you see a turtle, smile at the turtle and say, hey, I know you, you are a vertebrate, you have a backbone, which is cool, okay?
28
Alright turtle, can you hear me turtle?
29
Turtle!
30
If you would like to learn more about reptiles, we have a full video on it.
31
You can check it out after this video.
32
Alright time for more Turtle Facts!
33
We want to be experts on turtles!
34
Turtle Masters!
35
Let's talk about this.
36
What do turtles eat?
37
Huh, that's a good question.
38
Well that depends on the type of turtle and what kind of food is around it.
39
spend their day looking for food.
40
They can eat things like insects, fish, worms, or different kinds of plants.
41
Because they eat both meat and plants, turtles are omnivores.
42
Can you say omnivores?
43
Uh-huh.
44
Turtles are omnivores.
45
That means they eat both plants and meat.
46
It's interesting, their eating habits can actually change as they get older too.
47
When turtles are young, they eat more meat and older turtles tend to eat more plants.
48
Now that's not always the case.
49
Younger turtles can eat plants too and older turtles can eat meat, but their diet changes as they get older.
50
Oh look at this, here's a picture of a turtle with a buddy.
51
Well, at least you would think these turtles are friends, that they're buddies.
52
Well guess what, they really aren't friends, okay?
53
Get ready for a sad fact.
54
Turtles don't usually interact with each other.
55
They're not very social animals and they don't interact with other turtles.
56
If they're in a group, they don't even acknowledge one another.
57
They're just doing their thing.
58
In this picture, they're eating together.
59
They're enjoying a meal and it would be like, cool if they were turtle friends, if they were friends, but turtles don't become friends with other turtles.
60
Turtles don't have turtle friends.
61
They just do their own thing.
62
The good news is a turtle can be friends with you.
63
Some people have turtles as pets.
64
Do you know anyone with a pet turtle?
65
Okay.
66
Alright, we are ready for our next turtle fact.
67
Did you know turtles love the water and spend most of their time there?
68
This is actually the major difference between turtles and tortoises.
69
Turtles spend most of their time in the water and tortoises spend most of their time on land.
70
Now sometimes people get these animals confused because they look very similar
71
and they're from the same family but they are different because of where they spend most of their time.
72
Turtles spend most of their time in the water, tortoises spend most of their time on land.
73
Look at this amazing sea turtle.
74
All turtles spend most of their time in the water, but none as much as sea turtles.
75
Sea turtles are all about the water.
76
But you know, even sea turtles spend a little bit of time on land.
77
In fact, female sea turtles lay eggs on the shore
78
and the baby sea turtles make their way to the water once they hatch.
79
And it's interesting, baby turtles are called hatchlings.
80
That's right, hatchlings.
81
That's such a cute name and they look so cute.
82
Hatchlings are so adorable, but notice, you know, their mother's not helping them.
83
That's because turtles, remember, are not social animals, okay?
84
They don't really interact with one another that much, and so they're kind of left on their own.
85
That may be why turtles don't celebrate Mother's Day.
86
Their Mother's Day card would just say, Dear Mother, I hatched and did everything on my own.
87
Love, baby turtle.
88
Of course, no turtle video would be complete without sharing more about that famous shell.
89
The outer part of the shell is made of something called keratin, the same thing your fingernails are made of.
90
Your fingernails are made of the same thing as turtle shells.
91
And as you can see, the shell is great for protection.
92
Turtles can hide their heads and their feet in their shells.
93
But not every turtle can hide in its shell.
94
For example, sea turtles can't hide in their shells, but we shouldn't feel bad for them.
95
Look at where they live!
96
Wow, absolutely beautiful.
97
Hey, what was your favorite turtle fact?
