Hey everybody, welcome to this B1 English Listening Practice video.
2
You can use this video to practice your listening and comprehension as I speak.
3
You ready?
4
So today I'm going to talk about the gym.
5
This is a pretty important topic because many people go to the gym and need to know some important terminology related to the gym.
6
Let's start out by talking about some of the most popular benches, machines, and apparatuses.
7
So the most popular and iconic station at the gym is probably the flat bench.
8
This is where we bench press.
9
Of course you can use the flat bench for tons of other exercises as well, but its primary use is for bench pressing.
10
Then you've got other types of benches such as the incline bench and the decline bench, and there are 90 degrees seated benches too.
11
You can do all kinds of chest and shoulder presses on these benches, and you can use dumbbells or barbells.
12
Dumbbells are the individual weights that are held in each hand, whereas a barbell is one long bar where you put weights on both sides and grip it with two hands.
13
Moving on from the benches, you've got another really important station in the gym, the squat rack.
14
If you go to the gym regularly, you'll know that the squat rack is always taken.
15
There's always someone using it and unfortunately most gyms only have two or three of them.
16
So don't expect to be able to use it at all during peak hours.
17
The reason why this apparatus is so popular is because it's the foundation for most leg workouts.
18
Leg day just wouldn't be the same without doing some squats.
19
Alright, besides benches and the squat rack, you've also got pull-up bars.
20
This is where you can use your own body weight to work out your lats, your back muscles, by pulling yourself up.
21
This is one of the hardest exercises that exists.
22
I used to be pretty good at pull-ups, but now I'm not as fit as I used to be, so I'm just average at them.
23
There are also a lot of machines that can be used for all the different muscle groups.
24
You've got machines for bicep curls, leg presses, hamstring extensions, shoulder presses, lat pulls, and many other exercises.
25
Usually, the fancier the gym, the more state-of-the-art machines they have.
26
Other common gym equipment includes cables, medicine balls, jump ropes, and many other things.
27
And lastly, you've got many machines used for cardio workouts.
28
The most popular of these is the treadmill, which is used to walk or run.
29
I hate the treadmill, because I like running outside in the fresh air, and I don't like the feeling of running and not actually going anywhere.
30
Besides the treadmill, there are also ellipticals, stair masters, bicycles, and many other machines.
31
Okay, so now let's just talk a little bit about the different muscle groups that you work out at the gym.
32
The major muscle groups would probably be the chest, the back, and the legs.
33
Your chest muscles are called your pecs.
34
Your biggest back muscles are your lats and your traps.
35
And your leg muscles include your quads, your calves, your hamstrings, and you could probably include the glutes in there too.
36
Your more minor muscle groups that you work out include your abs, your shoulders, and your arms.
37
Your shoulder muscles are called your deltoids, and your arm muscles are your biceps and triceps.
38
Okay, that's all for today.
39
Leave a comment and tell me what type of exercises you like to do.
40
I'll see you next time.
