Hello, and welcome back to my Slow English Podcast.
2
Why am I learning Chinese?
3
This podcast is for you to practice your English listening while being engaged in real-life stories about me.
4
I've been learning Chinese for four years now.
5
On and off.
6
For four years.
7
Because I get lazy sometimes.
8
I'm sure you know how hard it is to find motivation every day to study a new language.
9
To sit down and read or write or take a lesson.
10
And it's the same for me.
11
I get really lazy and unmotivated to study Chinese sometimes.
12
And that was actually a huge inspiration for me to start with my Slow English podcast.
13
I found a YouTube channel.
14
I found a YouTube channel who told slow Chinese stories.
15
Her channel is called Lazy Chinese and she uses comprehensible input.
16
But it was the first time that I actually felt excited.
17
Excited because I understood the language I had been practicing for four years
18
and it was so easy to understand.
19
And without even trying, I was learning so many new words
20
and practicing so many new grammar structures just by listening
21
and looking at her slow hand gestures and facial gestures.
22
I was so inspired to continue studying Chinese
23
because it was the first time I actually understood Chinese because she was speaking so slow.
24
The first time after four years of studying,
25
practicing, listening, I finally felt progress and achievement.
26
And when you don't feel progress or achievement,
27
when you don't feel like you're improving at something
28
it's hard to keep giving your best at improving it's hard to give your 100% percent.
29
So I thought how many students,
30
especially my own students, feel the same way?
31
Feel like they don't understand English and they never will.
32
Only because it takes a long time to see progress in the real world.
33
But in a slow, demonstrated way,
34
so many people would realize that they actually do understand English.
35
They actually understand much more than they think.
36
So I decided one day to make a video,
37
specifically a TikTok, where I spoke slowly
38
and I made lots of hand gestures at a speed that anyone could understand.
39
using hand gestures in a way where you could understand even
40
if you had never studied English because body language speaks much louder than words.
41
The video did amazing.
42
Everyone felt exactly how I imagined they would feel.
43
And my TikTok went viral.
44
The next day, I woke up to my phone going crazy.
45
And I knew I had to make more videos.
46
Longer, shorter, on YouTube, on TikTok.
47
As many as I could make.
48
Now, here we are today.
49
And I'm still trying to come up with creative ideas
50
every day to find new ways for you to understand and speak English with confidence.
51
Confidence, the only thing that matters.
52
My dad, for example, he came to the USA
53
when he was 17 years old and he didn't know a lick of English.
54
He would just walk around with his dictionary and speak,
55
order food, buy groceries, ask for directions.
56
He had no other option.
57
He was thrown into the deep end right away when he arrived in the u.s
58
he only had himself and a will to learn confidence it's all you need fake it until you make it
59
His dedication is admirable.
60
And I know for a fact, that's where I got mine.
61
When you truly believe something,
62
no matter how absurd it could be at the moment,
63
If you really believe, you can make it a reality.
64
Just pretend or fake it until you make it.
65
But anyways, going back to the topic about why I am learning Chinese,
66
A lot of people ask me why I decided to learn Chinese.
67
And to be honest, my sister was the one to inspire me.
68
She used to be obsessed with learning Chinese.
69
And all she did was study and practice Chinese.
70
We got to talking and I was overwhelmed with the same desire to go to China someday.
71
I also loved the complexity of Mandarin and how challenging it would be to learn it.
72
It has no similarities whatsoever.
73
And I can't imagine learning a language with no similarities whatsoever between each other.
74
Imagine if I have been learning Chinese for four years
75
and I can barely form a full sentence and Chinese people are learning English the same way.
76
It's very difficult.
77
But I also loved the idea of being an English,
78
Spanish, and Mandarin teacher.
79
That would be a dream for me.
80
So, I started studying Chinese.
81
And I was determined in learning Chinese.
82
I found the best podcasts to listen to.
83

84
and I even started taking Chinese classes online.

I had a great teacher.
86

87
and she was always able to turn a casual
88
conversation into a grammar lesson where I learned new words,
89
new grammar structures, and I never felt burnt out or frustrated after a lesson.

95
and graceful she's always willing to help without rushing
96
or judging you
97
and thoughtful in all of her lessons you can feel
98
the care she puts into every lesson my dad students always have the highest scores
99
and the kids love him.
100
They both put so much work into teaching kids
101
and I know firsthand that teaching kids is a challenge.
102
It's hard to make a lesson entertaining, educational, and memorable.
103
But my mom and my dad both work very hard to do just that.
104
That's where my passion for teaching comes from.
105
All in all, you don't have to end up living in a place where they speak that language to learn that language.
106
Because at the end of the day,
107
the journey of learning a language is the most important part.

Learn for you.
109
