Pratica di Shadowing: Van Gogh at the National Gallery - Impara a parlare inglese con i video

Creazione lezione...
1
Today I'm at the National Gallery in London to see a brand new exhibition about Vincent van Gogh.
2
And this is one of his most famous works.
3
This is Sunflowers and it dates from 1888.
4
And sunflowers are inextricably associated with van Gogh.
5
He once declared, "The sunflower is mine." And that's not hard to believe when looking at this painting,
6
this symphony of yellow tones, grey.
7
And in this oil painting we have 15 sunflowers,
8
all at different stages of their life cycle from young blood through to maturity and eventually decay and death.
9
And so although this might seem like a straightforward still life, there's plenty of ways people have interpreted this over the years.
10
Perhaps it follows the Vanitas tradition of Dutch 17th century flower paintings which emphasise this decay and death, the transience of human life.
11
The sunflower
12
associated with love since around the 16th century and this was
13
because just as the sunflower turns to follow the sun
14
so the true believer also turns to follow Christ so perhaps there's a religious undertone here too.
15
Now if we look closely we can see
16
that van Gogh has used long strokes
17
which follow the direction of the petals the leaves and the stems and some have said that there is curving lines.
18
The paint here is incredibly thick in places and this is usually described as impasto,
19
a technique used in painting where the paint is laid on very thick
20
so you can actually see it raised above the surface.
21
In other areas of the canvas you can see small raised dabs of stippled paint
22
which create the texture of bristling seed heads.
23
So there's all kinds of different techniques on this canvas paintings.
24
However the visit ended in tragedy.
25
Two months in the artist began fighting.
26
Van Gogh threatened Gauguin with a knife and then cut off part of his own ear.
27
Gauguin returned to Paris and they never saw each other again.
28
So it's a tragic story but quite remarkable that within that darkness Van Gogh managed to create such beautiful works of art.
29
Now in the exhibition today there are plenty people often pick off on is his extraordinary use of colour,
30
the way that he might use red, for example, in the sky to create clouds, or blue as shading in a brown landscape.
31
There's also plenty of swirling lines which make these landscapes feel alive, as if you could feel or see the wind rippling through the long grass, through the trees.
32
realism.
33
They captured an impression of the scene or even something more,
34
perhaps they captured the impression of the light changing or an atmosphere or an emotion or a feeling.
35
Now this exhibition, Van Gogh Poets and Lovers, is at the National Gallery from the 14th of September to the 19th of January
36
so if you are in London make sure to pay it a visit.
37
And just to end, one of my favourite 3rd of September, 1888.
38
In a painting he wrote, "I'd like to say something consoling, like a piece music.
39
Well, I think when visitors come to this exhibition and take time to look at these incredible paintings,
40
I'm sure that they will find much to console them and much to delight.
41
Thank you.
