Trade tensions between the United States and Canada appear to be escalating as of the 8th of September.

The two countries share a border and a long-time allies and trading partners.

But Canada has officially imposed tariffs ranging from 25 to 50

percent on the wide range of U.S goods imported into the country.

Our Vietnam television correspondent in the United States, Thay Thang, has more.

Canada's official list of US products subject to the new tariffs cover 629 product categories.

Steel and aluminum face the highest tariff rates at 50%.

Products subject to the lowest rate of 25% include electronics, household appliances and dairy products.

The tariffs cover approximately US$20 billion worth of American goods.

is roughly equivalent to the value of Canadian goods targeted by U.S tariff imposed on 22nd August,

following the breakdown of tariff negotiations between the two countries in Washington, D.C.

U.S.

President Donald Trump has indicated that Washington is considering tougher measures against Canada.

These could include higher tariffs on Canadian automobiles,

as well as restrictions on the operations of Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier in the United States.

What people and businesses on both sides of the border fear is not just the roughly $20 billion tariffs,

but the possibility that these measures could trigger a cycle of retaliation, hurting the business environment and disrupting global trade.
