1
Let's do some British accent shadowing.
2
If you're new here, I'm Ashley Howard, a UK voice coach, and I help people with loads of things including accent.
3
And today we're shadowing an extract from The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson,
4
a dark and atmospheric classic of British literature.
5
The CEFR level is between B2 to C1, and the first part of the video is Listen and Repeat,
6
and in the second, see if you can speak along with me at the same time, and there's a free PDF with vocabulary notes you can download using the link in the description.
7
Ready?
8
Let's do it!
9
Mr Utterson, the lawyer, was a man of a rugged countenance,
10
that was never lighted by a smile.
11
cold, scanty, and embarrassed in discourse,
12
backward in sentiment, lean, long,
13
dusty, dreary, and yet somehow lovable.
14
At friendly meetings, and when the wine was to his taste,
15
something eminently human, beaconed from his eye,
16
something indeed which never found its way into his talk,
17
but which spoke not only in these silent symbols of the after-dinner face,
18
but more often and loudly in the acts of his life.
19
He was austere with himself, drank gin when he was alone,
20
to mortify a taste for vintages.
21
And though he enjoyed the theatre,
22
had not crossed the doors of one for twenty years.
23
But he had an approved tolerance for others, sometimes wondering,
24
almost with envy at the
25
high pressure of spirits involved in their misdeeds,
26
and in any extremity, inclined to help rather than to reprove.
27
I inclined to Cain's hearsay,
28
he used to say quaintly.
29
I let my brother go to the devil in his own way.
30
In this character, it was frequently his fortune to be the last reputable acquaintance,
31
and the last good influence,
32
in the lives of down-going men, And to such as these,
33
so long as they came about his chambers,
34
he never marked a shade of change in his demeanour.
35
Just to say that if you are enjoying this, after the video, check out my 12-week pronunciation Roadmap course.
36
Details are in the description below.
37
Let's get back to it.
38
No doubt the feat was easy to Mr. Rutterson,
39
for he was undemonstrative at the best, and
40
And even his friendship seemed to
41
be founded in a similar catholicity of good nature.
42
It is the mark of a modest man to accept his friendly circle,
43
ready-made from the hands of opportunity.
44
And that was the lawyer's way.
45
His friends were those of his own blood, or those whom he had known the longest.
46
His affections, like ivy, were the growth of time,
47
they implied no aptness in the object.
48
Hence, no doubt the bond that united him to Mr. Richard Enfield,
49
his distant kinsman, the well-known man about town.
50
It was a nut to crack for many.
51
What these two could see in each other.
52
Or what subject they could find in common.
53
It was reported by those who
54
encountered them in their Sunday walks that they said nothing,
55
looked singularly dull,
56
and would hail with obvious relief the appearance of a friend.
57
For all that, the two men put the greatest store by these excursions,
58
counted them the chief jewel of each week,
59
and not only set aside occasions of pleasure,
60
but even resisted the calls of business,
61
that they might enjoy them uninterrupted.
62
Now try speaking with me at the same time.
63
After that, check out my three British accent training books, which are linked in the description below.

  • "a man of a rugged countenance" (um homem de rosto severo)
  • "cold, scanty, and embarrassed in discourse" (frio, reservado e embaraçado na fala)
  • "something eminently human" (algo eminentemente humano)
  • "the bond that united him to" (o laço que o unia a)
