7.1 Simon When I was about 30,
2
I got a job as an editor in a publishing company.
3
It was my first office job, and I didn't really know what to wear.
4
But for the interview, I wore a suit.
5
In fact, I bought the suit specially for the interview.
6
I got the job, so I thought that must be okay.
7
So, on the first day, I went to work wearing a suit and tie.
8
I got to work early.
9
I wanted to make a good impression, and I was the first person in the office.
10
So I went in, I found my desk with my name on it, and I sat down.
11
And there were a few papers and documents for me to read, so I started reading those.
12
I turned on my computer and after about 10, 15 minutes, the other people in the office started to arrive.
13
And I noticed that nobody else was wearing a suit.
14
And I thought, okay, it's not a big problem.
15
So I introduced myself to the other people.
16
I said, hello, how are you?
17
Hello, pleased to meet you
18
and the next thing someone said to me was my computer's
19
really slow do you think you know what the problem is
20
and I said no no not really
21
so then I introduced myself to somebody else
22
and said hello nice to meet you
23
and she replied hello nice to meet you
24
and then she said do you know how I can connect my computer to the printer.
25
And I said, no, I have no idea how to do that.
26
Anyway, I went back to work and about half an hour later I had a meeting with my boss.
27
And she said, how's it going?
28
And I said, yeah, it's all good.
29
Well, everybody seems really nice.
30
Um, just one thing.
31
Why does everybody think I can fix their computer?
32
And she looked at me and what I was wearing, and she said, it's your suit.
33
Nobody in this office ever wears a suit.
34
So they think you're from the IT department and you've come to help with a computer problem.
35
They're the only ones who wear suits.
36
So, I never wore it again, to this day.
37
It was my first day at work as a teacher at a language school.
38
And they asked me to come the first week of term to observe some teachers, to watch their lessons.
39
and then I was going to start teaching the following week.
40
But when I arrived there, they told me that one of the teachers was ill
41
and they asked me to take the class and it was three-year-old kids.
42
So I was in a class with about ten three-year-olds who were running around.
43
My boss gave me a storybook to read to them but the kids couldn't speak any English.
44
I'd never taught, or never been trained to teach children that small.
45
I tried to read the book to two of them
46
but the others were running around shouting and hitting each other
47
and at the worst possible moment just
48
when all of them were being really noisy
49
and not doing anything I was telling them to my boss the director of the school opened the door
50
and just looked at me I felt terrible
51
but then she said these children are too young for you aren't they and I said yes I was nearly crying
52
luckily after that she never gave me any classes with really young children
53
but it was the most stressful class I've ever tried to teach

  • Make a good impression: Fazer uma boa impressão. Exemplo: "Quero me vestir bem para make a good impression no meu chefe."
  • Fix their computer: Consertar o computador deles. Uma expressão prática para situações de trabalho.
  • Observe some teachers: Observar alguns professores.

I got a job" (ficando quase "I gotajob").
