3
And I'm Beth.
4
You can find a video version of this podcast and a worksheet to help you learn on our website, bbclearningenglish .com.
5
How are you today, Beth?
6
I'm okay, Neil.
7
I'm a little bit tired.
8
How are you?
9
I'm very well.
10
I'm fine.
11
Great.
12
Good, good.
13
Well, today we're going to talk about mistakes.
14
So hopefully I won't make many mistakes being tired.
15
No, mistakes.
16
Mistakes can be things that are wrong, like a mistake in a maths problem.
17
But we can also use mistake to talk about really big things in life, decisions that you've made, actions that you've taken.
18
Yes, that's true.
19
So I think let's start the conversation.
20
Let's do it.
21
So Beth, have you made any mistakes recently?
22
Yes.
23
So I recently left my suitcase on a train by mistake.
24
Oh no.
25
So I was traveling from home to leeds on the train um
26
and i got to the station at leeds
27
and there were loads of people and they were they were football fans
28
and they were singing really loudly and i just wanted to get off the train
29
and that's what i did and then i realized about half an hour later
30
that i didn't have my suitcase oh no
31
so that's a bad mistake did you get it back i did i was
32
so lucky the train stopped at leeds so when i realized i ran and said to the people on the platform
33
my suitcase is on the train and they held the train for me
34
and i ran up the platform i grabbed my suitcase
35
and then they blew the whistle and the train went oh i was
36
so lucky but yeah that was a big mistake and i will not make that mistake again everybody says that
37
so earlier we said that mistakes can be small things like my suitcase
38
but there are big mistakes that we can make
39
so have you ever made a a big mistake do you think yeah well once um i had a job
40
that i really really enjoyed i was teaching at a school in prague in the czech republic teaching english
41
and i loved the job and i had loads of really good friends
42
but i had this feeling
43
that I needed to go move somewhere else do something else with my life and so I resigned
44
but then about a week or
45
so later I realized I really really didn't want to leave
46
that school so I went back to the boss
47
and I said I've changed my mind I want to stay
48
and he said well it's too late
49
because I've given your job to somebody else oh no that's
50
so sad so you left your job left Prague no actually a bit like your suitcase
51
Beth um it ended up it ended up being okay
52
because the person who took my job um then decided
53
that he didn't want the job either so in the end I did stay.
54
So when we make mistakes, Neil, sometimes we then have a regret or we regret the thing that we did.
55
That means that we feel bad about it or we wish that we'd done something differently.
56
Do you have any regrets?
57
Yeah.
58
When I was a kid, I guess I was probably 12 or 13 I had some piano lessons
59
and I quit as soon as I could my parents gave me
60
that choice and I regret that because I love music
61
and I play guitar
62
and I think it I would have enjoyed playing piano
63
I always think to be honest you shouldn't have any regrets
64
because whatever you've done you've learned something from it even
65
if something bad happened then you know for next time
66
and it's a kind of self -improvement thing
67
that is a very positive attitude to mistakes beth yeah i think it's important to learn from your mistakes
68
and that's a common expression in english to learn from your mistakes
69
Let's recap the vocabulary we've learned in this podcast, starting with mistake.
70
And a mistake is an action that is wrong or that you do when you don't mean to.
71
And we can make a mistake.
72
That means we do something wrong.
73
Or we can do something by mistake, which means we do something accidentally, without meaning to.
74
For example, I left my suitcase on the train by mistake.
75
We also heard regret, which means feel bad or sorry about something you've done or a mistake that you've made.
76
And we heard learn from your mistakes, which means remember the mistake and then not do it again the next time.
77
That's it for this episode of Real Easy English.
78
You can test yourself on what you've learned with a worksheet on our website, bbclearningenglish .com.
79
See you then.
80
Goodbye.
81
Bye.
