Lektion 35 · Etappe 3: Pläne, Bitten & Vergleiche
Keine Pflicht: don't have to / needn't
MittelstufeNo obligation: don't have to / needn't
Form & Gebrauch
don't have to / don't need to / needn't + Verb — etwas ist nicht nötig
1.Form
Um zu sagen, dass etwas nicht nötig ist (du kannst es tun, musst aber nicht), benutzt du don't have to, don't need to oder needn't + Grundform.
| Form | Beispiel | Hinweis |
|---|---|---|
| don't / doesn't have to | You don't have to pay. · Thu doesn't have to work on Sundays. | am häufigsten; passt in jeder Situation |
| don't / doesn't need to | We don't need to hurry. | gleiche Bedeutung wie don't have to; das to bleibt |
| needn't | You needn't wait for me. | kein to, kein -s; etwas förmlich, vor allem britisch |
| didn't have to / didn't need to | We didn't have to queue. | Vergangenheit |
| won't have to / won't need to | We won't have to take the ferry any more. | Zukunft |
needn't funktioniert wie ein Modalverb (kein -s, kein to): He needn't come. need als normales Verb braucht to und do: He doesn't need to come. Vermisch die beiden nicht (nicht needn't to, nicht doesn't need come).
2.Wann du es benutzt
You don't have to come with me. I can go alone.
Du musst nicht mitkommen. Ich kann allein gehen.
It's Sunday tomorrow, so I don't have to get up early.
Thu doesn't have to pay rent. She lives with her parents.
Thu muss keine Miete zahlen. Sie wohnt bei ihren Eltern.
The test is open-book, so you don't need to learn the dates by heart.
You don't have to bring anything. Just come!
Du musst nichts mitbringen. Komm einfach!
You needn't worry. Everything is ready.
Du musst dir keine Sorgen machen. Alles ist fertig.
You don't have to shout. I can hear you.
4. Fragen, ob etwas nötig ist
Do I have to bring my passport? — No, you don't.
Muss ich meinen Pass mitbringen? — Nein, musst du nicht.
Do we need to book? — No, you don't need to. Just walk in.
Müssen wir reservieren? — Nein, müsst ihr nicht. Kommt einfach vorbei.
3.Don't have to oder mustn't?
| Bedeutung | |
|---|---|
| You don't have to tell him. |
| You mustn't tell him. |
You don't have to pay for the drinks. They're free.
Für die Getränke musst du nicht bezahlen. Sie sind gratis.
You mustn't park here. It's for ambulances only.
Hier darfst du nicht parken. Das ist nur für Krankenwagen.
Schnelltest: Passt „…aber du kannst, wenn du willst“ dazu, nimm don't have to. Meinst du „es ist verboten“, nimm mustn't. Merke: „muss nicht“ ist don't have to, nie mustn't.
4.Über die Vergangenheit sprechen
In der Vergangenheit sagst du didn't have to oder didn't need to: Es war nicht nötig.
The bus was almost empty, so we didn't have to stand.
Lan didn't need to cook — her mum had made dinner.
Im Alltag sagen viele einfach didn't need to.
Oh, you needn't have bought milk — I got some this morning.
