Nessun obbligo: don't have to / needn't

Intermedio

No obligation: don't have to / needn't

Forma e uso

don't have to / don't need to / needn't + verbo — qualcosa non è necessario

1.Forma

Per dire che qualcosa non è necessario (puoi farlo, ma non serve), usa don't have to, don't need to o needn't + forma base.

FormaEsempioNota
don't / doesn't have toYou don't have to pay. · Thu doesn't have to work on Sundays.la più comune; va bene in qualsiasi situazione
don't / doesn't need toWe don't need to hurry.stesso significato di don't have to; non togliere to
needn'tYou needn't wait for me.senza to, senza -s; un po' formale, soprattutto britannico
didn't have to / didn't need toWe didn't have to queue.passato
won't have to / won't need toWe won't have to take the ferry any more.futuro

needn't funziona come un modale (senza -s, senza to): He needn't come. need come verbo normale vuole to e do: He doesn't need to come.

1. Qualcosa è facoltativo: puoi farlo, se vuoi

  • You don't have to come with me. I can go alone.

Non sei obbligato a venire con me. Posso andare da solo.

  • It's Sunday tomorrow, so I don't have to get up early.

Domani è domenica, quindi non devo alzarmi presto.

2. La situazione dispensa qualcuno dal fare qualcosa

  • Thu doesn't have to pay rent. She lives with her parents.

Thu non deve pagare l'affitto. Vive con i suoi genitori.

  • The test is open-book, so you don't need to learn the dates by heart.

  • You don't have to bring anything. Just come!

Non c'è bisogno di portare niente. Vieni e basta!

  • You needn't worry. Everything is ready.

Non c'è bisogno di preoccuparsi. È tutto pronto.

  • You don't have to shout. I can hear you.

Non c'è bisogno di urlare. Ti sento.

4. Chiedere se qualcosa è necessario

  • Do I have to bring my passport? — No, you don't.

Devo portare il passaporto? — No, non serve.

  • Do we need to book? — No, you don't need to. Just walk in.

Bisogna prenotare? — No, non serve. Venite pure.

3.Don't have to o mustn't?

Sembrano simili, ma vogliono dire cose completamente diverse:

Significato
You don't have to tell him.Non è necessario dirglielo (ma puoi farlo).
You mustn't tell him.Non dirglielo: non è permesso.
  • You don't have to pay for the drinks. They're free.

Non dovete pagare le bevande. Sono gratis.

  • You mustn't park here. It's for ambulances only.

Qui è vietato parcheggiare. È riservato alle ambulanze.

Prova rapida: se potresti aggiungere “…ma puoi farlo, se vuoi”, usa don't have to. Se intendi “è vietato”, usa mustn't. Attenzione al nostro “non devi”: di solito vuol dire mustn't, mentre “non c'è bisogno” è don't have to.

4.Parlare del passato

Al passato si usa didn't have to o didn't need to: non era necessario.

  • The bus was almost empty, so we didn't have to stand.

L'autobus era quasi vuoto, quindi non abbiamo dovuto stare in piedi.

  • Lan didn't need to cook — her mum had made dinner.

  • Oh, you needn't have bought milk — I got some this morning.

5.Errori comuni

  • You mustn't pay for the drinks. They're free.

You don't have to pay for the drinks. They're free.

Non necessario → don't have to; mustn't vuol dire vietato.

  • He don't have to work on Saturdays.

He doesn't have to work on Saturdays.

    he/she/it → doesn't.

  • She doesn't has to cook tonight.

She doesn't have to cook tonight.

Dopo doesn't si usa have, non has.

  • You needn't to call me first.

    You needn't call me first.

    Niente to dopo needn't.

  • You don't need bring anything.

You don't need to bring anything.

    don't need vuole to.

  • We haven't to wait.

    We don't have to wait.

La negativa di have to si fa con don't.

Esempi

  • It's Sunday tomorrow, so I don't have to get up early.
  • Thu doesn't have to worry about rent. She lives with her parents.
  • We don't need to hurry. The film starts at nine.
  • You don't have to take your shoes off. Come in!
