Zorunluluk yok: don't have to / needn't

Bir şeyin gerekli olmadığını (yapabilirsin ama gerek yok) söylemek için don't have to, don't need to ya da needn't + yalın fiil kullan.

💡needn't bir modal gibi çalışır (-s yok, to yok): He needn't come. Normal fiil olan need ise to ve do alır: He doesn't need to come. İkisini karıştırma (needn't to değil, doesn't need come değil).

1. Bir şey isteğe bağlı — istersen yapabilirsin

• You don't have to come with me. I can go alone.

  Benimle gelmek zorunda değilsin. Tek başıma gidebilirim.

• It's Sunday tomorrow, so I don't have to get up early.

  Yarın pazar, o yüzden erken kalkmak zorunda değilim.

2. Durum, birini bir şeyi yapmaktan muaf tutuyor

• Thu doesn't have to pay rent. She lives with her parents.

  Thu kira ödemek zorunda değil. Ailesiyle yaşıyor.

• The test is open-book, so you don't need to learn the dates by heart.

Bunlar benzer görünür ama tamamen farklı anlamlara gelir:

• You don't have to pay for the drinks. They're free.

  İçecekler için ödeme yapmana gerek yok. Ücretsiz.

• You mustn't park here. It's for ambulances only.

  Buraya park etmemelisin. Sadece ambulanslar için.

💡Hızlı test: cümleye “…ama istersen yapabilirsin” ekleyebiliyorsan don't have to kullan. “Yasak” demek istiyorsan mustn't kullan.

Geçmişte didn't have to ya da didn't need to kullan: gerekli değildi.

• The bus was almost empty, so we didn't have to stand.

  Otobüs neredeyse boştu, o yüzden ayakta durmak zorunda kalmadık.

• Lan didn't need to cook — her mum had made dinner.

  Lan'ın yemek yapmasına gerek kalmadı — annesi akşam yemeğini hazırlamıştı.

Bir şey yapıldıysa ama gereksiz olduğu ortaya çıktıysa, İngiliz İngilizcesinde needn't have + V3 kullanılabilir. Günlük konuşmada birçok kişi sadece didn't need to der.

• Oh, you needn't have bought milk — I got some this morning.
