ไม่จำเป็น: don't have to / needn't

ถ้าจะบอกว่าอะไรไม่จำเป็น (ทำได้ แต่ไม่ต้องทำก็ได้) ให้ใช้ don't have to, don't need to หรือ needn't + กริยารูปเดิม

💡needn't ใช้เหมือน modal (ไม่เติม -s ไม่มี to): He needn't come ส่วน need ที่เป็นกริยาทั่วไปต้องมี to และ do: He doesn't need to come อย่าเอาสองแบบมาปนกัน (ไม่ใช่ needn't to และไม่ใช่ doesn't need come)

1. เรื่องที่จะทำหรือไม่ทำก็ได้ — อยากทำก็ทำได้

• You don't have to come with me. I can go alone.

  คุณไม่ต้องไปกับฉันก็ได้ ฉันไปคนเดียวได้

• It's Sunday tomorrow, so I don't have to get up early.

  พรุ่งนี้วันอาทิตย์ ฉันเลยไม่ต้องตื่นเช้า

2. สถานการณ์ทำให้ใครบางคนไม่ต้องทำอะไร

• Thu doesn't have to pay rent. She lives with her parents.

  ทูไม่ต้องจ่ายค่าเช่า เธออยู่กับพ่อแม่

• The test is open-book, so you don't need to learn the dates by heart.

  ข้อสอบเปิดหนังสือได้ คุณเลยไม่ต้องท่องจำวันที่

3. บอกคนอื่นว่าไม่ต้องลำบาก — สุภาพและเป็นมิตร

• You don't have to bring anything. Just come!

  ไม่ต้องเอาอะไรมานะ มาตัวเปล่าก็พอ!

• You needn't worry. Everything is ready.

  ไม่ต้องห่วง ทุกอย่างพร้อมแล้ว

• You don't have to shout. I can hear you.

  ไม่ต้องตะโกนก็ได้ ฉันได้ยิน (ความหมายจริง: ช่วยหยุดตะโกนที)

4. ถามว่าอะไรจำเป็นหรือไม่

• Do I have to bring my passport? — No, you don't.

  ฉันต้องเอาพาสปอร์ตไปไหม — ไม่ต้อง

• Do we need to book? — No, you don't need to. Just walk in.

  เราต้องจองไหม — ไม่ต้องจอง เดินเข้ามาได้เลย

สองคำนี้ดูคล้ายกัน แต่ความหมายต่างกันโดยสิ้นเชิง:

• You don't have to pay for the drinks. They're free.

  คุณไม่ต้องจ่ายค่าเครื่องดื่ม ฟรี

• You mustn't park here. It's for ambulances only.

  ห้ามจอดรถตรงนี้ ที่นี่สำหรับรถพยาบาลเท่านั้น

💡ทดสอบง่าย ๆ: ถ้าเติมว่า “…แต่ถ้าอยากทำก็ทำได้” แล้วความหมายยังถูก ให้ใช้ don't have to ถ้าหมายถึง “ห้าม” ให้ใช้ mustn't

ในอดีต ใช้ didn't have to หรือ didn't need to: ตอนนั้นไม่จำเป็น

• The bus was almost empty, so we didn't have to stand.

  รถบัสแทบไม่มีคน เราเลยไม่ต้องยืน

• Lan didn't need to cook — her mum had made dinner.

  ลานไม่ต้องทำอาหาร — แม่ของเธอทำมื้อเย็นไว้แล้ว

ถ้าเรื่องนั้นทำไปแล้ว แต่กลายเป็นว่าไม่จำเป็น อังกฤษแบบบริติชใช้ needn't have + กริยาช่อง 3 ได้ ในภาษาพูดทั่วไป หลายคนก็แค่พูดว่า didn't need to

• Oh, you needn't have bought milk — I got some this morning.

  อ้าว ไม่ต้องซื้อนมมาก็ได้ — ฉันซื้อไว้แล้วเมื่อเช้า (ซื้อมาแล้ว แต่ไม่จำเป็น)

• ✗You mustn't pay for the drinks. They're free.

  ✓You don't have to pay for the drinks. They're free.

  ไม่จำเป็น → don't have to ส่วน mustn't แปลว่าห้าม

• ✗He don't have to work on Saturdays.

  ✓He doesn't have to work on Saturdays.
