คำแสดงคำถาม + to-infinitive

คำแสดงคำถาม + to + กริยารูปเดิม ทำหน้าที่เหมือนคำถามสั้น ๆ ที่อยู่ในประโยค: what to do = what I should do, where to go = where I should go มักตามหลัง know, decide, learn, remember, ask, explain, tell, show…

💡ภาษาไทยพูดว่า “ไม่รู้จะพูดอะไร” โดยมีกริยาตามหลังคำแสดงคำถามทันที ผู้เรียนจึงมักลืม to (ไม่ใช่: I don't know what say) จำไว้ว่า: คำแสดงคำถาม + to + กริยา

1. บอกว่าไม่รู้หรือไม่แน่ใจว่าจะทำอะไร

• We're lost. We don't know which way to go.

  เราหลงทาง ไม่รู้ว่าจะไปทางไหน

• I'm not sure what to wear to the interview.

  ฉันไม่แน่ใจว่าจะใส่อะไรไปสัมภาษณ์งาน

2. ถามทางหรือขอคำแนะนำอย่างสุภาพ

• Excuse me, can you tell me how to get to the bus station?

  ขอโทษครับ ช่วยบอกหน่อยได้ไหมว่าไปสถานีขนส่งยังไง

• Do you know where to park around here?

  คุณรู้ไหมว่าแถวนี้จอดรถได้ที่ไหน

3. เรียน สอน หรือแสดงวิธีทำอะไร — learn / teach / show + how to

• I learned how to swim when I was six.

4. ตัดสินใจ จำได้ ลืม — decide / remember / forget + คำแสดงคำถาม + to

• Have you decided where to go for your holiday?

  คุณตัดสินใจหรือยังว่าจะไปเที่ยวที่ไหนช่วงวันหยุด

• I always forget how to spell “necessary”.

  ฉันลืมทุกทีว่า “necessary” สะกดยังไง

กับ tell, show, teach, ask คนจะตามหลังกริยาทันที อยู่หน้าคำแสดงคำถาม แต่ explain ต่างออกไป: explain to me how to… หรือไม่ใส่คนเลย: explain how to…

• She showed me how to fold a paper crane.

  เธอสอนฉันพับนกกระเรียนกระดาษ

• Could you explain to me what to do next?

  ช่วยอธิบายให้ฉันฟังหน่อยได้ไหมว่าต้องทำอะไรต่อ (ไม่ใช่: explain me)

  ไม่มีใครบอกเราว่าจะเริ่มเมื่อไร

คำแสดงคำถาม + to-infinitive หมายถึงสิ่งที่ใครสักคนควร / ทำได้ และผู้ทำคือประธาน (หรือคนที่ถูกพูดถึง) ถ้าจะพูดถึงคนอื่นหรือข้อเท็จจริง ให้ใช้อนุประโยคเต็มที่เรียงคำแบบประโยคบอกเล่า

• ปกติ why ไม่ใช้แบบนี้: I don't know why I should go (ไม่ใช่: why to go)
• หน้า to-infinitive ใช้ whether ไม่ใช่ if: I'm not sure whether to call him.
• หลัง learn จะมี how หรือไม่มีก็ได้: learn to swim = learn how to swim
• รูปแบบนี้ตามหลังคำคุณศัพท์และคำนามได้ด้วย: I'm not sure what to do. · I have no idea where to start.
