Palabra interrogativa + to-infinitivo
PrincipianteQuestion word + to-infinitive
Forma y uso
how to…, what to…, where to… — una palabra interrogativa seguida de to
1.Forma
Palabra interrogativa + to + forma base funciona como una pequeña pregunta dentro de una oración: what to do = qué debo hacer, where to go = adónde debo ir. Suele ir después de know, decide, learn, remember, ask, explain, tell, show…
| Palabra interrogativa | Ejemplo | Significado |
|---|---|---|
| what to | I don't know what to say. | qué debería decir |
| where to | Do you know where to buy tickets? | dónde se pueden comprar entradas |
| how to | My grandma is learning how to send emails. | la manera de enviar correos |
| when to | Tell me when to stop. | cuándo debo parar |
| who to | I'm not sure who to ask. | a quién debería preguntar |
| which / what + sustantivo + to | We can't decide which film to watch. | qué película deberíamos ver |
| how much / how many + to | I don't know how much to tip. | cuánto debería dejar de propina |
| whether to | She can't decide whether to stay or leave. | si debería quedarse o irse |
En español decimos “no sé qué decir” o “adónde ir”: el infinitivo va justo después de la palabra interrogativa, así que es fácil olvidar el to en inglés (no: I don't know what say). Recuerda: palabra interrogativa + to + verbo.
2.Cuándo se usa
We're lost. We don't know which way to go.
Estamos perdidos. No sabemos por dónde ir.
I'm not sure what to wear to the interview.
2. Pedir indicaciones o instrucciones con cortesía
Excuse me, can you tell me how to get to the bus station?
Do you know where to park around here?
¿Sabes dónde se puede estacionar por aquí?
3. Aprender, enseñar o mostrar cómo hacer algo: learn / teach / show + how to
I learned how to swim when I was six.
Aprendí a nadar a los seis años.
Can you show me how to use this machine?
¿Me enseñas cómo se usa esta máquina?
4. Decidir, recordar, olvidar: decide / remember / forget + palabra interrogativa + to
Have you decided where to go for your holiday?
¿Ya decidiste adónde ir de vacaciones?
I always forget how to spell “necessary”.
Explain es distinto: explain to me how to…, o se omite la persona: explain how to…
She showed me how to fold a paper crane.
Could you explain to me what to do next?
¿Me podría explicar qué tengo que hacer ahora? (no: explain me)
Nobody told us when to start.
Nadie nos dijo cuándo empezar.
4.¿Infinitivo con to u oración completa?
| Infinitivo con to | Oración completa |
|---|---|
| I don't know what to do. | I don't know what I should do. (mismo significado) |
| Do you know where to buy tickets? | Do you know where she bought her ticket? (otra persona, un hecho) |
| I can't remember how to get there. | I can't remember how far it is. (no es posible con to) |
- why normalmente no se usa así: I don't know why I should go (no: why to go).
- Delante de un infinitivo con to, usa whether, no if: I'm not sure whether to call him.
- Después de learn, how es opcional: learn to swim = learn how to swim.
