how to…, what to…, where to… — प्रश्नवाचक शब्द जिसके बाद to आता है
1.रूप (Form)
प्रश्नवाचक शब्द + to + मूल रूप वाक्य के अंदर एक छोटे प्रश्न की तरह काम करता है: what to do = मुझे क्या करना चाहिए, where to go = मुझे कहाँ जाना चाहिए। यह अक्सर know, decide, learn, remember, ask, explain, tell, show… के बाद आता है।

हिंदी में हम कहते हैं “मुझे नहीं पता क्या कहूँ” — प्रश्नवाचक शब्द के बाद सीधे क्रिया आ जाती है, इसलिए सीखने वाले अक्सर to छोड़ देते हैं (I don't know what say नहीं)। याद रखें: प्रश्नवाचक शब्द + to + क्रिया।

1. यह कहना कि आपको पता नहीं या पक्का नहीं कि क्या करें
We're lost. We don't know which way to go.
हम रास्ता भटक गए हैं। हमें नहीं पता किस तरफ़ जाएँ।
I'm not sure what to wear to the interview.
मुझे पक्का नहीं पता कि इंटरव्यू में क्या पहनूँ।
2. विनम्रता से रास्ता या निर्देश पूछना
Excuse me, can you tell me how to get to the bus station?
माफ़ कीजिए, क्या आप बता सकते हैं कि बस अड्डे तक कैसे पहुँचें?
Do you know where to park around here?

3. कोई काम करना सीखना, सिखाना या दिखाना — learn / teach / show + how to
I learned how to swim when I was six.

4. तय करना, याद रखना, भूल जाना — decide / remember / forget + प्रश्नवाचक शब्द + to
Have you decided where to go for your holiday?
क्या आपने तय कर लिया कि छुट्टियों में कहाँ जाना है?
I always forget how to spell “necessary”.
मैं हमेशा भूल जाता हूँ कि “necessary” की स्पेलिंग कैसे लिखते हैं।
3.व्यक्ति कहाँ आता है?
tell, show, teach, ask के साथ व्यक्ति सीधे क्रिया के बाद, प्रश्नवाचक शब्द से पहले आता है। Explain अलग है: explain to me how to…, या व्यक्ति को छोड़ दें: explain how to…
She showed me how to fold a paper crane.
उसने मुझे काग़ज़ का सारस मोड़ना सिखाया।
Could you explain to me what to do next?

4.To-infinitive या पूरा उपवाक्य?
प्रश्नवाचक शब्द + to-infinitive का मतलब है किसी को क्या करना चाहिए / क्या कर सकता है, और काम करने वाला वाक्य का कर्ता (या जिस व्यक्ति का ज़िक्र है) होता है। किसी और के बारे में या किसी तथ्य के बारे में बात करने के लिए, सामान्य वाक्य वाले शब्द-क्रम में पूरा उपवाक्य इस्तेमाल करें।

- why आम तौर पर इस तरह इस्तेमाल नहीं होता: I don't know why I should go (why to go नहीं)।
- to-infinitive से पहले if नहीं, whether लगाएँ: I'm not sure whether to call him।
- learn के बाद how लगाना ज़रूरी नहीं: learn to swim = learn how to swim।
- यह ढाँचा विशेषणों और संज्ञाओं के बाद भी आता है: I'm not sure what to do. · I have no idea where to start।
5.आम गलतियाँ
