Parola interrogativa + to-infinito
PrincipianteQuestion word + to-infinitive
Forma e uso
how to…, what to…, where to… — una parola interrogativa seguita da to
1.Forma
Parola interrogativa + to + forma base funziona come una breve domanda dentro una frase: what to do = che cosa dovrei fare, where to go = dove dovrei andare. Viene spesso dopo know, decide, learn, remember, ask, explain, tell, show…
| Parola interrogativa | Esempio | Significato |
|---|---|---|
| what to | I don't know what to say. | che cosa dovrei dire |
| where to | Do you know where to buy tickets? | dove si possono comprare i biglietti |
| how to | My grandma is learning how to send emails. | il modo per mandare le email |
| when to | Tell me when to stop. | quando dovrei fermarmi |
| who to | I'm not sure who to ask. | a chi dovrei chiedere |
| which / what + sostantivo + to | We can't decide which film to watch. | quale film dovremmo guardare |
| how much / how many + to | I don't know how much to tip. | quanto dovrei lasciare di mancia |
| whether to | She can't decide whether to stay or leave. | se dovrebbe restare o andarsene |
In italiano l'infinito viene subito dopo la parola interrogativa (“non so cosa dire”), quindi è facile dimenticare to (non: I don't know what say). Ricorda: parola interrogativa + to + verbo.
2.Quando si usa
We're lost. We don't know which way to go.
Ci siamo persi. Non sappiamo da che parte andare.
I'm not sure what to wear to the interview.
2. Chiedere indicazioni o istruzioni in modo cortese
Excuse me, can you tell me how to get to the bus station?
Do you know where to park around here?
3. Imparare, insegnare o mostrare come si fa qualcosa: learn / teach / show + how to
I learned how to swim when I was six.
Ho imparato a nuotare a sei anni.
Can you show me how to use this machine?
4. Decidere, ricordare, dimenticare: decide / remember / forget + parola interrogativa + to
Have you decided where to go for your holiday?
Hai deciso dove andare in vacanza?
I always forget how to spell “necessary”.
Explain è diverso: explain to me how to…, oppure si omette la persona: explain how to…
She showed me how to fold a paper crane.
Could you explain to me what to do next?
Mi potresti spiegare che cosa fare adesso? (non: explain me)
Nobody told us when to start.
Nessuno ci ha detto quando cominciare.
4.To-infinito o frase completa?
| To-infinito | Frase completa |
|---|---|
| I don't know what to do. | I don't know what I should do. (stesso significato) |
| Do you know where to buy tickets? | Do you know where she bought her ticket? (un'altra persona, un fatto) |
| I can't remember how to get there. | I can't remember how far it is. (qui to non è possibile) |
- why di solito non si usa in questo modo: I don't know why I should go (non: why to go).
- Prima di un to-infinito si usa whether, non if: I'm not sure whether to call him.
- Dopo learn, how è facoltativo: learn to swim = learn how to swim.
- La struttura segue anche aggettivi e sostantivi: I'm not sure what to do. · I have no idea where to start.
5.Errori comuni
