Mot interrogatif + to-infinitif
DébutantQuestion word + to-infinitive
Forme et emploi
how to…, what to…, where to… — un mot interrogatif suivi de to
1.Formation
Mot interrogatif + to + base verbale fonctionne comme une petite question à l'intérieur d'une phrase : what to do = ce que je dois faire, where to go = où je dois aller. On le trouve souvent après know, decide, learn, remember, ask, explain, tell, show…
| Mot interrogatif | Exemple | Sens |
|---|---|---|
| what to | I don't know what to say. | ce que je devrais dire |
| where to | Do you know where to buy tickets? | où on peut acheter des billets |
| how to | My grandma is learning how to send emails. | la façon d'envoyer des e-mails |
| when to | Tell me when to stop. | quand je dois m'arrêter |
| who to | I'm not sure who to ask. | à qui je dois demander |
| which / what + nom + to | We can't decide which film to watch. | quel film on devrait regarder |
| how much / how many + to | I don't know how much to tip. | combien je devrais laisser de pourboire |
| whether to | She can't decide whether to stay or leave. | si elle devrait rester ou partir |
En français, on dit « je ne sais pas quoi dire » ou « où aller » : l'infinitif suit directement le mot interrogatif, donc on oublie souvent to en anglais (pas : I don't know what say). Retiens : mot interrogatif + to + verbe.
2.Quand l'utiliser
1. Dire que tu ne sais pas ou que tu n'es pas sûr de ce qu'il faut faire
We're lost. We don't know which way to go.
On est perdus. On ne sait pas par où aller.
I'm not sure what to wear to the interview.
2. Demander poliment son chemin ou des instructions
Excuse me, can you tell me how to get to the bus station?
Excusez-moi, pouvez-vous me dire comment aller à la gare routière ?
Do you know where to park around here?
Tu sais où se garer par ici ?
3. Apprendre, enseigner ou montrer comment faire quelque chose — learn / teach / show + how to
I learned how to swim when I was six.
J'ai appris à nager à six ans.
Can you show me how to use this machine?
Tu peux me montrer comment utiliser cette machine ?
4. Décider, se souvenir, oublier — decide / remember / forget + mot interrogatif + to
Have you decided where to go for your holiday?
Tu as décidé où partir en vacances ?
I always forget how to spell “necessary”.
J'oublie toujours comment s'écrit « necessary ».
Explain est différent : explain to me how to…, ou on ne mentionne pas la personne : explain how to…
She showed me how to fold a paper crane.
Could you explain to me what to do next?
(pas : explain me)
Nobody told us when to start.
| Infinitif avec to | Proposition complète |
|---|---|
| I don't know what to do. | I don't know what I should do. (même sens) |
| Do you know where to buy tickets? | Do you know where she bought her ticket? (quelqu'un d'autre, un fait) |
| I can't remember how to get there. | I can't remember how far it is. (impossible avec to) |
- why ne s'emploie normalement pas de cette façon : I don't know why I should go (pas : why to go).
- Devant un infinitif avec to, on utilise whether, pas if : I'm not sure whether to call him.
- Après learn, how est facultatif : learn to swim = learn how to swim.
- La structure suit aussi des adjectifs et des noms : I'm not sure what to do. · I have no idea where to start.
