Obbligo: must / have to / need to
PrincipianteObligation: must / have to / need to
Forma e uso
dire che qualcosa è necessario
1.Forma
Tre modi per dire che qualcosa è necessario: must, have to, need to, tutti + forma base. Must è un verbo modale; have to e need to funzionano come verbi normali.
| must | have to | need to | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Affermativa | I / she must go. | I have to go. · She has to go. | I need to go. · She needs to go. |
| Negativa | mustn't go (= non farlo) | don't / doesn't have to go (= non è necessario) | don't / doesn't need to go (= non è necessario) |
| Domanda | Must I go? (raro) | Do I have to go? · Does she have to go? | Do I need to go? |
| Passato | — (si usa had to) | had to go | needed to go |
Must non prende mai -s, to o do: She must go. Have to / need to sono il contrario: She has to go. Does she need to go?
2.Quando si usano
1. have to: necessario per regole, lavoro o circostanze (un fatto, non l'opinione di chi parla)
I have to wear a uniform at work.
Al lavoro devo indossare la divisa.
Linh has to take two buses to get to school.
Do you have to work on Sundays?
It's late. I must go.
È tardi. Devo andare.
I must call my grandma this weekend.
You must try the coconut coffee here — it's amazing!
3. must: regole scritte, cartelli e istruzioni

Tutti i visitatori devono registrarsi alla reception.
Passengers must keep their bags with them at all times.
My phone is almost dead. I need to charge it.
Il telefono è quasi scarico. Devo caricarlo.
Do we need to book a table, or can we just walk in?
Bisogna prenotare un tavolo o possiamo presentarci direttamente?
5. have got to: uguale a have to, molto comune nel parlato informale
Sorry, I've got to go — my bus is leaving.
Nell'inglese americano must per esprimere un obbligo suona piuttosto forte e formale; gli americani di solito dicono have to o have got to (gotta). Nel dubbio, have to va quasi sempre bene.
3.Altri tempi verbali: si usa have to
Per il passato, dopo will / might, al present perfect o dopo un altro verbo, usa have to.
| Tempo / forma | Esempio |
|---|---|
| Passato | I had to wait an hour for the bus. |
| Futuro | Prices go up next month, so we'll have to pay more. |
| Might have to | We might have to sell the car. |
| Present perfect | I've had to wear glasses since I was ten. |
| Dopo un altro verbo | I hate having to get up in the dark. |
4.Mustn't è molto diverso da don't have to
| Significato | Esempio | |
|---|---|---|
| mustn't | non farlo: non è permesso | You mustn't smoke in here. It's a hospital. |
| don't have to / don't need to | non è necessario: puoi farlo se vuoi | You don't have to bring food. There's plenty. |
You mustn't touch the paintings.
Non devi toccare i quadri.
You don't have to take your shoes off. Come in!
Entra pure!
mustn't = è vietato; don't have to = è facoltativo. Vedi anche la lezione “Nessun obbligo: don't have to / needn't”.
