Advice with “should”

Forma e uso

should + verbo — dire che cosa è meglio fare

1.Forma

should + forma base (senza to). Should è un verbo modale: è uguale per tutti i soggetti, non prende mai la -s e non usa do / does nelle domande e nelle negative.

Esempi
AffermativaI / you / she / we / they should rest.
Negativashouldn't (= should not) worry
DomandaShould I call her? · What should I do?
Risposta breveYes, you should. / No, you shouldn't.

should funziona come can e will: si mette subito prima del verbo. Ricorda solo: niente to dopo (non should to go) e niente do (non don't should, non Do I should…?).

2.Quando si usa

  • You've got a fever. You should see a doctor.

Hai la febbre. Dovresti andare dal medico.

  • It's cold outside. You should wear a jacket.

Fuori fa freddo. Dovresti metterti una giacca.

2. Dire che qualcosa è una cattiva idea

  • You shouldn't drink coffee so late at night.

  • Tourists shouldn't drink the tap water here.

3. Chiedere un consiglio: Should I…?, What / Which / Where should I…?

  • Should I bring a gift to the party?

Devo portare un regalo alla festa?

  • Which bus should I take to get to the airport?

Che autobus devo prendere per andare all'aeroporto?

  • What do you think I should do?

Secondo te che cosa dovrei fare? (non: What do you think should I do?)

4. Ammorbidire un consiglio con I think / I don't think

  • I think we should leave now.

    Secondo me dovremmo andare adesso.

  • I don't think you should lend him any more money.

Non credo che dovresti prestargli altri soldi. (più naturale di: I think you shouldn't…)

  • Minh left an hour ago, so he should be home by now.

  • The parcel should arrive on Friday.

    Il pacco dovrebbe arrivare venerdì.

3.Ought to

ought to + forma base significa quasi la stessa cosa di should, ma è meno comune e suona un po' più formale. Si usa soprattutto nelle frasi affermative; nelle domande e nelle negative quasi tutti usano should / shouldn't.

  • You ought to back up your photos.

Dovresti fare un backup delle tue foto.

  • We ought to leave now, or we'll miss the bus.

Dovremmo andare adesso, altrimenti perdiamo l'autobus.

4.Should, must o have to?

ParolaSignificatoEsempio
shouldconsiglio o opinione: chi ascolta può anche non seguirloYou should try the street food here.
mustchi parla sente che è necessario o molto importante; anche regole scritteI must remember to call my mum.
have tonecessario per una regola o per la situazioneWe have to show our tickets at the gate.

Per la necessità, vedi “Obbligo: must / have to / need to”.

Se è solo un consiglio, l'inglese usa should (You should go to bed early). Must / have to possono suonare come un ordine, a meno che tu non lo dica con entusiasmo (You must try this cake!).

5.Altre forme con should

  • should be + -ing: che cosa qualcuno dovrebbe fare in questo momento: Why are you watching TV? You should be studying!
  • should be + participio passato (forma passiva): Raw meat should be kept in the fridge.
  • should have + participio passato: era una buona idea, ma non è successo: I failed the test. I should have studied harder. Vedi la lezione “Modale + have + V3”.

6.Errori comuni

  • You should to see a doctor.

    You should see a doctor.

    Niente to dopo should.

  • You don't should drink coffee at night.

You shouldn't drink coffee at night.

  • Do I should wear a suit?

    Should I wear a suit?

Domande: should va prima del soggetto.

  • My sister shoulds study abroad.

    My sister should study abroad.

should non prende mai la -s.

  • What do you think should I wear?

What do you think I should wear?

Dopo do you think si usa l'ordine della frase affermativa.

  • We ought go home now.

We ought to go home now.

    ought vuole sempre to.

Esempi

  • You look tired. You should go to bed early tonight.
  • It's cold outside. You should wear a jacket.
  • Your eyes are red. You shouldn't look at your phone so much.
  • The tap water here isn't safe. Tourists shouldn't drink it.
