Forma e uso

Shall we…? Why don't we…? How about -ing? — proporre cosa fare

StrutturaSeguito daEsempio
Let's …forma baseLet's eat out tonight.
Let's not …forma baseLet's not tell Mum yet.
Shall we …?forma baseShall we sit by the window?
Why don't we / you …?forma baseWhy don't we ask Lan?
Why not …?forma base (senza soggetto)Why not try the other shop?
How about / What about …?forma in -ing o un sostantivoHow about going to Da Lat? · What about Saturday?
We could …forma baseWe could take the train.

How about / What about finiscono con la preposizione about, quindi il verbo che segue va in -ing: How about going…? (non How about go…?). Tutte le altre strutture vogliono la forma base, senza to.

2.Quando si usano

1. Proporre di fare qualcosa insieme: Let's…, Shall we…?, Why don't we…?, How about…?

  • It's so hot. Let's go for a swim.

Fa un caldo tremendo. Andiamo a fare il bagno.

  • Shall we take a break? I'm exhausted.

    Facciamo una pausa? Sono distrutto.

  • Why don't we cook at home tonight?

Perché stasera non cuciniamo a casa?

2. Suggerire che cosa potrebbe fare un'altra persona: Why don't you…?, Why not…?, You could…

  • You look tired. Why don't you lie down for a bit?

Sembri stanco. Perché non ti sdrai un po'?

  • If the shirt is too big, why not change it?

  • You could ask your teacher for help.

Potresti chiedere aiuto al tuo insegnante.

3. Chiedere proposte: What / Where / When shall we…?

  • What shall we do this weekend?

Che cosa facciamo questo fine settimana?

  • Where shall we meet? — How about the café near the station?

Dove ci vediamo?

4. Proporre un'alternativa: How about / What about + un sostantivo o un pronome

  • I can't do Friday. What about Sunday?

    Venerdì non posso. E domenica?

  • I'd like a pizza. How about you?

Io prendo una pizza. E tu?

“Why don't you take a break?”

Gli americani dicono più spesso Should we…? o Do you want to…?
Why don't we / you …?morbida e amichevole, molto comune nel parlato
How about / What about …?informale: mette un'idea sul tavolo
We could … / Maybe we could …la più morbida e la meno insistente
  • Let's go, shall we?

Andiamo, dai? (la question tag dopo Let's è shall we)

  • Maybe we could leave a bit earlier to avoid the traffic.

FunzioneChe cosa puoi dire
AccettareGood idea! · Sounds great. · Sure, why not? · Yes, let's.
Dire di no con gentilezzaI'd rather not. · I'm not sure about that. · Maybe another time. · Sorry, I can't today.
Proporre qualcos'altroHow about … instead? · Why don't we … instead?
  • Shall we get a taxi? — Yes, let's. It's getting late.

Prendiamo un taxi? — Sì, dai. Si sta facendo tardi.

  • Let's watch a horror film. — Hmm, I'd rather not. How about a comedy instead?

Rispondere solo “No.” a una proposta suona brusco.

  • Minh suggested going to the night market.

  • I suggest we leave before the rain starts.

  • The doctor suggested that I drink more water.

(non: suggested me to drink)

6.Errori comuni

  • How about go to the cinema?

How about going to the cinema?

    Dopo about si usa -ing.

  • Why don't we going to the night market?

Why don't we go to the night market?

Why don't we + forma base.

  • Shall we to start now?

    Shall we start now?

    Niente to dopo shall.

  • Let's to eat out tonight.

    Let's eat out tonight.

Let's + forma base, senza to.

  • Why not to take a taxi?

    Why not take a taxi?

Why not + forma base, senza to.

  • She suggested me to call the hotel.

She suggested (that) I call the hotel.

suggest non è seguito da persona + to-infinito.

Esempi

  • It's a lovely day. Why don't we go to the beach?
  • How about watching a film tonight?
  • Why don't we take a taxi? It's raining.
  • What about meeting at the café at seven?
