제안하기

영어에는 무엇을 할지 제안하는 패턴이 여러 가지 있습니다. 핵심은 각 패턴 뒤에 어떤 동사 형태가 오는지 기억하는 것입니다.

💡How about / What about은 전치사 about으로 끝나기 때문에, 뒤에 동사가 오면 -ing를 붙입니다: How about going…?(How about go…?는 틀림). 나머지 패턴은 모두 to 없이 동사원형을 씁니다.

1. 함께 무언가를 하자고 제안하기 — Let's…, Shall we…?, Why don't we…?, How about…?

• It's so hot. Let's go for a swim.

  너무 덥다. 수영하러 가자.

• Shall we take a break? I'm exhausted.

  좀 쉴까? 너무 지쳤어.

• Why don't we cook at home tonight?

  오늘 저녁은 집에서 해 먹는 게 어때?

2. 다른 사람이 할 만한 일을 제안하기 — Why don't you…?, Why not…?, You could…

• You look tired. Why don't you lie down for a bit?

  피곤해 보여. 좀 누워 있는 게 어때?

• If the shirt is too big, why not change it?

  셔츠가 너무 크면 바꾸는 게 어때?

• You could ask your teacher for help.

  선생님께 도와 달라고 해도 되잖아.

3. 제안을 구하기 — What / Where / When shall we…?

• What shall we do this weekend?

  이번 주말에 뭐 할까?

• Where shall we meet? — How about the café near the station?

  어디서 만날까? — 역 근처 카페는 어때?

4. 선택지를 내놓기 — How about / What about + 명사나 대명사

• I can't do Friday. What about Sunday?

  금요일은 안 돼. 일요일은 어때?

• I'd like a pizza. How about you?

  나는 피자 먹고 싶어. 너는?

💡Why don't you…?는 진짜 질문일 수도 있고 제안일 수도 있습니다. 어느 쪽인지는 문맥과 억양으로 알 수 있습니다. “Why don't you eat meat?”는 이유를 묻는 것일 수 있습니다. “Why don't you take a break?”는 제안이므로 듣는 사람이 아무것도 설명할 필요가 없습니다.

패턴들은 대체로 같은 뜻이지만, 어떤 것은 다른 것보다 더 직접적입니다:

• Let's go, shall we?

  이제 가자, 응? (Let's의 부가의문문은 shall we)

• Maybe we could leave a bit earlier to avoid the traffic.

  차 막히지 않게 조금 일찍 출발하면 어떨까.

• Shall we get a taxi? — Yes, let's. It's getting late.

  택시 탈까? — 응, 그러자. 늦었어.

• Let's watch a horror film. — Hmm, I'd rather not. How about a comedy instead?

  공포 영화 보자. — 음, 난 별로야. 대신 코미디는 어때?

💡제안에 “No.”라고만 대답하면 퉁명스럽게 들립니다. 짧은 이유나 다른 아이디어를 덧붙이면(Maybe another time — I'm busy tonight.) 훨씬 자연스럽고 정중합니다.

누군가의 제안을 전하거나 좀 더 격식 있게 제안할 때는 동사 suggest를 씁니다. 뒤에는 -ing나 (that) + 절이 옵니다. suggest + 사람 + to부정사는 쓰지 않습니다.

• Minh suggested going to the night market.

  민이 야시장에 가자고 제안했어요.

• I suggest we leave before the rain starts.

  비가 오기 전에 출발하는 게 좋겠어요.

• The doctor suggested that I drink more water.

  의사가 저에게 물을 더 많이 마시라고 권했어요. (suggested me to drink는 틀림)

• ✗How about go to the cinema?

  about 뒤에는 -ing.

• ✗Why don't we going to the night market?

  ✓Why don't we go to the night market?

  Why don't we + 동사원형.

• ✗Shall we to start now?

  ✓Shall we start now?

  shall 뒤에 to를 쓰지 않습니다.

• ✗Let's to eat out tonight.

  ✓Let's eat out tonight.

  Let's + 동사원형, to 없음.

• ✗Why not to take a taxi?

  Why not + 동사원형, to 없음.

• ✗She suggested me to call the hotel.

  ✓She suggested (that) I call the hotel.

  suggest 뒤에는 사람 + to부정사가 오지 않습니다.
