提案

英語には、何をするか提案するためのパターンがいくつかあります。大事なのは、それぞれのあとにどの動詞の形が来るかを覚えることです。

💡How about / What about は前置詞 about で終わるので、後ろに動詞が来るときは -ing 形になります：How about going…?（How about go…? とは言いません）。ほかのパターンはすべて to をつけずに原形を続けます。

1. 一緒に何かしようと提案する — Let's…、Shall we…?、Why don't we…?、How about…?

• It's so hot. Let's go for a swim.

  すごく暑いね。泳ぎに行こう。

• Shall we take a break? I'm exhausted.

  ちょっと休憩しようか？くたくただよ。

• Why don't we cook at home tonight?

  今夜は家で料理しない？

2. 相手がしたらいいことを提案する — Why don't you…?、Why not…?、You could…

• You look tired. Why don't you lie down for a bit?

  疲れているみたいだね。少し横になったら？

• If the shirt is too big, why not change it?

  シャツが大きすぎるなら、交換してもらったら？

• You could ask your teacher for help.

  先生に助けてもらうこともできるよ。

3. 提案を求める — What / Where / When shall we…?

• What shall we do this weekend?

  今週末、何をしようか？

• Where shall we meet? — How about the café near the station?

  どこで会おうか？ — 駅の近くのカフェはどう？

4. 選択肢を示す — How about / What about + 名詞または代名詞

• I can't do Friday. What about Sunday?

  金曜日は無理なんだ。日曜日はどう？

• I'd like a pizza. How about you?

  私はピザがいいな。あなたは？

💡Why don't you…? は、本当の質問のこともあれば提案のこともあります。どちらなのかは文脈とイントネーションでわかります。「Why don't you eat meat?」は理由をたずねているのかもしれません。「Why don't you take a break?」は提案で、聞き手は何も説明する必要がありません。

どのパターンもだいたい同じ意味ですが、ほかより直接的なものがあります：

• Let's go, shall we?

  さあ、行こうか。（Let's の付加疑問は shall we）

• Maybe we could leave a bit earlier to avoid the traffic.

  渋滞を避けるために、少し早めに出たらどうかな。

• Shall we get a taxi? — Yes, let's. It's getting late.

  タクシーで行こうか？ — うん、そうしよう。遅くなってきたし。

• Let's watch a horror film. — Hmm, I'd rather not. How about a comedy instead?

  ホラー映画を見ようよ。 — うーん、やめておきたいな。代わりにコメディはどう？

💡提案に「No.」とだけ答えるとぶっきらぼうに聞こえます。短い理由や別の案を添える（Maybe another time — I'm busy tonight.）と、ずっと自然で丁寧になります。

誰かの提案を伝えるとき、またはもっと改まって提案するときは、動詞 suggest を使います。後ろには -ing 形か (that) + 節 が来ます。suggest + 人 + to 不定詞 という形にはなりません。

• Minh suggested going to the night market.

  ミンはナイトマーケットに行こうと提案しました。

• I suggest we leave before the rain starts.

  雨が降り出す前に出発しませんか。

• The doctor suggested that I drink more water.

  医者は私にもっと水を飲むようにと勧めました。（suggested me to drink とは言わない）

• ✗How about go to the cinema?

  ✓How about going to the cinema?

  about のあとは -ing 形です。

• ✗Why don't we going to the night market?

  ✓Why don't we go to the night market?

  Why don't we + 原形。

• ✗Shall we to start now?

  ✓Shall we start now?

  shall のあとに to はつけません。

• ✗Let's to eat out tonight.

  ✓Let's eat out tonight.

  Let's + 原形。to はつけません。

• ✗Why not to take a taxi?

  ✓Why not take a taxi?

  Why not + 原形。to はつけません。

• ✗She suggested me to call the hotel.

  ✓She suggested (that) I call the hotel.

  suggest のあとに 人 + to 不定詞 は来ません。
