Shall we…? Why don't we…? How about -ing? — proposer quoi faire
|---|---|---|
| Let's … | base verbale | Let's eat out tonight. |
| Let's not … | base verbale | Let's not tell Mum yet. |
| Shall we …? | base verbale | Shall we sit by the window? |
| Why don't we / you …? | base verbale | Why don't we ask Lan? |
| Why not …? | base verbale (sans sujet) | Why not try the other shop? |
| How about / What about …? | forme en -ing ou un nom | How about going to Da Lat? · What about Saturday? |
| We could … | base verbale | We could take the train. |
How about / What about se terminent par la préposition about, donc un verbe après eux prend -ing : How about going…? (pas How about go…?).
1. Proposer de faire quelque chose ensemble — Let's…, Shall we…?, Why don't we…?, How about…?
It's so hot. Let's go for a swim.
Il fait trop chaud. Allons nous baigner.
Shall we take a break? I'm exhausted.
On fait une pause ? Je suis épuisé.
Why don't we cook at home tonight?
2. Suggérer ce que quelqu'un d'autre pourrait faire — Why don't you…?, Why not…?, You could…
You look tired. Why don't you lie down for a bit?
Tu as l'air fatigué.
If the shirt is too big, why not change it?
You could ask your teacher for help.
Tu pourrais demander de l'aide à ton professeur.
3. Demander des suggestions — What / Where / When shall we…?
What shall we do this weekend?
Qu'est-ce qu'on fait ce week-end ?
Where shall we meet? — How about the café near the station?
On se retrouve où ? — Que dirais-tu du café près de la gare ?
4. Proposer une option — How about / What about + un nom ou un pronom
I can't do Friday. What about Sunday?
Vendredi, je ne peux pas. Et dimanche ?
I'd like a pizza. How about you?
« Why don't you eat meat? » peut demander une raison. « Why don't you take a break?
| Shall we …? Les Américains disent plutôt Should we…? ou Do you want to…? |
| Why don't we / you …?
| How about / What about …? | décontracté — lance une idée |
| We could … / Maybe we could … | le plus doux et le moins insistant |
Let's go, shall we?
On y va ?
Maybe we could leave a bit earlier to avoid the traffic.
| But | Ce que tu peux dire |
|---|---|
| Accepter | Good idea! · Sounds great. · Sure, why not? · Yes, let's. |
| Refuser poliment | I'd rather not. · I'm not sure about that. · Maybe another time. · Sorry, I can't today. |
| Proposer autre chose | How about … instead? · Why don't we … instead? |
Shall we get a taxi? — Yes, let's. It's getting late.
On prend un taxi ? — Oui, allons-y. Il se fait tard.
Let's watch a horror film. — Hmm, I'd rather not. How about a comedy instead?
Regardons un film d'horreur. — Hmm, je préfère pas. Plutôt une comédie ?
Répondre juste « No. » à une suggestion paraît sec.
Minh suggested going to the night market.
I suggest we leave before the rain starts.
The doctor suggested that I drink more water.
(pas : suggested me to drink)
