İngilizcede ne yapılacağını önermek için birkaç kalıp var. Önemli olan, her birinden sonra fiilin hangi halde geldiğini hatırlamak.

💡How about / What about, about edatıyla biter, bu yüzden arkalarından gelen fiil -ing alır: How about going…? (How about go…? değil). Diğer bütün kalıplardan sonra to olmadan yalın fiil gelir.

1. Birlikte bir şey yapmayı önermek — Let's…, Shall we…?, Why don't we…?, How about…?

• It's so hot. Let's go for a swim.

  Hava çok sıcak. Hadi yüzmeye gidelim.

• Shall we take a break? I'm exhausted.

  Biraz mola verelim mi? Çok yorgunum.

• Why don't we cook at home tonight?

  Bu akşam evde yemek yapsak mı?

2. Başka birine ne yapabileceğini önermek — Why don't you…?, Why not…?, You could…

• You look tired. Why don't you lie down for a bit?

  Yorgun görünüyorsun. Biraz uzansana?

• If the shirt is too big, why not change it?

  Gömlek büyük geldiyse neden değiştirmiyorsun?

• You could ask your teacher for help.

  Öğretmeninden yardım isteyebilirsin.

3. Öneri istemek — What / Where / When shall we…?

• What shall we do this weekend?

  Bu hafta sonu ne yapalım?

• Where shall we meet? — How about the café near the station?

  Nerede buluşalım? — İstasyonun yanındaki kafeye ne dersin?

4. Bir seçenek sunmak — How about / What about + isim ya da zamir

• I can't do Friday. What about Sunday?

  Cuma olmaz. Pazara ne dersin?

• I'd like a pizza. How about you?

  Ben pizza yemek istiyorum. Ya sen?

💡Why don't you…? gerçek bir soru da olabilir, bir öneri de — hangisi olduğunu bağlam ve tonlama gösterir. “Why don't you eat meat?” bir sebep soruyor olabilir. “Why don't you take a break?” ise bir öneridir ve karşındakinin bir şey açıklaması gerekmez.

Bu kalıplar aşağı yukarı aynı anlama gelir, ama bazıları diğerlerinden daha direkttir:

• Let's go, shall we?

  Hadi gidelim, olur mu? (Let's'ten sonraki soru eki shall we'dir)

• Maybe we could leave a bit earlier to avoid the traffic.

  Belki trafiğe yakalanmamak için biraz daha erken çıkabiliriz.

• Shall we get a taxi? — Yes, let's. It's getting late.

  Taksiye binelim mi? — Evet, binelim. Geç oluyor.

• Let's watch a horror film. — Hmm, I'd rather not. How about a comedy instead?

  Korku filmi izleyelim. — Hmm, pek istemem. Onun yerine bir komediye ne dersin?

💡Bir öneriye sadece “No.” demek kaba duyulur. Kısa bir sebep ya da başka bir fikir eklemek (Maybe another time — I'm busy tonight.) çok daha doğal ve kibar duyulur.

Birinin önerisini aktarmak ya da daha resmî bir öneride bulunmak için suggest fiilini kullan. Arkasından -ing ya da (that) + cümle gelir — suggest + kişi + to + fiil gelmez.

• Minh suggested going to the night market.

  Minh gece pazarına gitmeyi önerdi.

• I suggest we leave before the rain starts.

  Yağmur başlamadan çıkmamızı öneririm.

• The doctor suggested that I drink more water.

  Doktor daha çok su içmemi önerdi. (suggested me to drink değil)

• ✗How about go to the cinema?

  ✓How about going to the cinema?

  about'tan sonra -ing kullan.

• ✗Why don't we going to the night market?

  ✓Why don't we go to the night market?

  Why don't we + yalın fiil.

• ✗Shall we to start now?

  ✓Shall we start now?

  shall'dan sonra to gelmez.

• ✗Let's to eat out tonight.

  ✓Let's eat out tonight.

  Let's + yalın fiil, to yok.

• ✗Why not to take a taxi?

  ✓Why not take a taxi?

  Why not + yalın fiil, to yok.

• ✗She suggested me to call the hotel.

  suggest'ten sonra kişi + to + fiil gelmez.
