Forma e uso
Shall we…? Why don't we…? How about -ing?
|---|---|---|
| Let's … | forma base | Let's eat out tonight. |
| Let's not … | forma base | Let's not tell Mum yet. |
| Shall we …? | forma base | Shall we sit by the window? |
| Why don't we / you …? | forma base | Why don't we ask Lan? |
| Why not …? | forma base (sem sujeito) | Why not try the other shop? |
| How about / What about …? | forma -ing ou um substantivo | How about going to Da Lat? · What about Saturday? |
| We could … | forma base | We could take the train. |
How about / What about terminam com a preposição about, então o verbo depois delas leva -ing: How about going…? (e não How about go…?). Todas as outras estruturas pedem a forma base, sem to.
2.Quando usar
1. Sugerir fazer algo juntos — Let's…, Shall we…?, Why don't we…?, How about…?
It's so hot. Let's go for a swim.
Está muito calor. Vamos nadar.
Shall we take a break? I'm exhausted.
Vamos fazer uma pausa? Estou exausto.
Why don't we cook at home tonight?
2. Sugerir o que outra pessoa poderia fazer — Why don't you…?, Why not…?, You could…
You look tired. Why don't you lie down for a bit?
Você parece cansado. Por que não se deita um pouco?
If the shirt is too big, why not change it?
You could ask your teacher for help.
Você poderia pedir ajuda ao seu professor.
3. Pedir sugestões — What / Where / When shall we…?
What shall we do this weekend?
Where shall we meet? — How about the café near the station?
Onde a gente se encontra? — Que tal o café perto da estação?
4. Propor uma opção — How about / What about + substantivo ou pronome
I can't do Friday. What about Sunday?
Sexta não dá para mim. E domingo?
I'd like a pizza. How about you?
“Why don't you eat meat?” pode estar perguntando o motivo. “Why don't you take a break?”
| Shall we …? Os americanos costumam dizer Should we…? ou Do you want to…? |
| Why don't we / you …? | suave e simpática, muito comum na fala |
| How about / What about …? | descontraída — coloca uma ideia na mesa |
| We could … / Maybe we could …
Let's go, shall we?
Maybe we could leave a bit earlier to avoid the traffic.
|---|---|
| Concordar | Good idea! · Sounds great. · Sure, why not? · Yes, let's. |
| Recusar com educação | I'd rather not. · I'm not sure about that. · Maybe another time. · Sorry, I can't today. |
| Sugerir outra coisa | How about … instead? · Why don't we … instead? |
Shall we get a taxi? — Yes, let's. It's getting late.
Vamos pegar um táxi? — Vamos. Está ficando tarde.
Let's watch a horror film. — Hmm, I'd rather not. How about a comedy instead?
5.O verbo suggest
Minh suggested going to the night market.
O Minh sugeriu ir ao mercado noturno.
I suggest we leave before the rain starts.
The doctor suggested that I drink more water.
(não: suggested me to drink)
