Forma y uso
Shall we…? Why don't we…? How about -ing?
|---|---|---|
| Let's … | forma base | Let's eat out tonight. |
| Let's not … | forma base | Let's not tell Mum yet. |
| Shall we …? | forma base | Shall we sit by the window? |
| Why don't we / you …? | forma base | Why don't we ask Lan? |
| Why not …? | forma base (sin sujeto) | Why not try the other shop? |
| How about / What about …? | forma en -ing o un sustantivo | How about going to Da Lat? · What about Saturday? |
| We could … | forma base | We could take the train. |
How about / What about terminan en la preposición about, así que un verbo después lleva -ing: How about going…? (no How about go…?).
1. Proponer hacer algo juntos — Let's…, Shall we…?, Why don't we…?, How about…?
It's so hot. Let's go for a swim.
Hace muchísimo calor. Vamos a nadar.
Shall we take a break? I'm exhausted.
¿Hacemos una pausa? Estoy agotado.
Why don't we cook at home tonight?
2. Sugerir lo que podría hacer otra persona — Why don't you…?, Why not…?, You could…
You look tired. Why don't you lie down for a bit?
Pareces cansado. ¿Por qué no te acuestas un rato?
If the shirt is too big, why not change it?
You could ask your teacher for help.
Podrías pedirle ayuda a tu profesor.
3. Pedir sugerencias — What / Where / When shall we…?
What shall we do this weekend?
¿Qué hacemos este fin de semana?
Where shall we meet? — How about the café near the station?
4. Proponer una opción — How about / What about + un sustantivo o un pronombre
I can't do Friday. What about Sunday?
El viernes no puedo. ¿Y el domingo?
I'd like a pizza. How about you?
| Shall we …? Los estadounidenses suelen decir Should we…? o Do you want to…? |
| Why don't we / you …? | suave y amistosa, muy frecuente al hablar |
| How about / What about …? | informal: pone una idea sobre la mesa |
| We could … / Maybe we could …
Let's go, shall we?
Maybe we could leave a bit earlier to avoid the traffic.
|---|---|
| Aceptar | Good idea! · Sounds great. · Sure, why not? · Yes, let's. |
| Decir que no con cortesía | I'd rather not. · I'm not sure about that. · Maybe another time. · Sorry, I can't today. |
| Proponer otra cosa | How about … instead? · Why don't we … instead? |
Shall we get a taxi? — Yes, let's. It's getting late.
¿Tomamos un taxi? — Sí, vamos. Se está haciendo tarde.
Let's watch a horror film. — Hmm, I'd rather not. How about a comedy instead?
Si añades un motivo breve u otra idea (Maybe another time — I'm busy tonight.), suena mucho más natural y cortés.
Minh suggested going to the night market.
Minh sugirió ir al mercado nocturno.
I suggest we leave before the rain starts.
