Consejo con “should”
PrincipianteAdvice with “should”
Forma y uso
should + verbo — decir qué es buena idea
1.Forma
should + forma base (sin to). Should es un verbo modal: es igual para todos los sujetos, nunca lleva -s y no usa do / does en preguntas ni negaciones.
| Ejemplos | |
|---|---|
| Afirmativa | I / you / she / we / they should rest. |
| Negativa | shouldn't (= should not) worry |
| Pregunta | Should I call her? · What should I do? |
| Respuesta corta | Yes, you should. / No, you shouldn't. |
should funciona como can y will: va justo delante del verbo. Solo recuerda: sin to después (no should to go) y sin do (no don't should, no Do I should…?).
2.Cuándo se usa
You've got a fever. You should see a doctor.
Tienes fiebre. Deberías ir al médico.
It's cold outside. You should wear a jacket.
Hace frío afuera. Deberías ponerte una chaqueta.
2. Decir que algo es mala idea
You shouldn't drink coffee so late at night.
Tourists shouldn't drink the tap water here.
3. Pedir consejo — Should I…?, What / Which / Where should I…?
Should I bring a gift to the party?
¿Debería llevar un regalo a la fiesta?
Which bus should I take to get to the airport?
What do you think I should do?
¿Qué crees que debería hacer? (no: What do you think should I do?)
4. Suavizar un consejo con I think / I don't think
I think we should leave now.
Creo que deberíamos irnos ya.
I don't think you should lend him any more money.
No creo que debas prestarle más dinero. (más natural que: I think you shouldn't…)
Minh left an hour ago, so he should be home by now.
The parcel should arrive on Friday.
El paquete debería llegar el viernes.
3.Ought to
You ought to back up your photos.
We ought to leave now, or we'll miss the bus.
4.¿Should, must o have to?
| Palabra | Significado | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| should | consejo u opinión: quien escucha puede decidir no hacerlo | You should try the street food here. |
I must remember to call my mum. |
| have to | necesario por una norma o por la situación | We have to show our tickets at the gate. |
Para la obligación, mira “Obligación: must / have to / need to”.
Si es solo un consejo, el inglés usa should (You should go to bed early), el equivalente de “deberías”. Must / have to puede sonar a orden, salvo que lo digas con entusiasmo (You must try this cake!).
5.Otras formas con should
- should be + -ing: lo que alguien debería estar haciendo en este momento: Why are you watching TV? You should be studying!
- should be + participio pasado (pasiva): Raw meat should be kept in the fridge.
- should have + participio pasado: era buena idea, pero no pasó: I failed the test. I should have studied harder. Mira la lección “Modal + have + V3”.
6.Errores comunes
