依頼・申し出・許可

手伝いを頼む、許可を求める、申し出る、誘う — 英語ではどれも can、could、may、would、shall を使った疑問文で表します。主なパターンを表にまとめました。

💡英語では、疑問文 + please にしたり could / would を使ったりして依頼を丁寧にします。「Open the door.」のような命令文だけだと、知らない人には偉そうに聞こえます。

Can you…? はくだけた言い方で、友だちや家族向きです。Could you…? はより丁寧で、ほとんど誰にでも使えます。Would you mind + -ing? はとても丁寧で、大きめのお願いに向いています。ここでの could に過去の意味はありません。

• Can you turn the TV down a bit?

  テレビの音、少し小さくしてくれる？

• Could you say that again, please?

  もう一度言っていただけますか？

• Would you mind waiting a few minutes?

  数分お待ちいただいてもよろしいでしょうか？

💡mind は「嫌だと思う」という意味です。だから Would you mind…? を引き受けるときは No, not at all. / Of course not.、または単に Sure! と言います。ただの「Yes」は「はい、嫌です」という意味になってしまいます。

ものを頼むとき：Can I have…? / Could I have…?（カフェや店では、特にアメリカで Can I get…? もよく聞きます）。何かをしてもいいかたずねるとき：Can I / Could I / May I + 動詞? — May I がいちばんかしこまった言い方です。Do you mind if I…? はとても丁寧で、if のあとの動詞は現在形です。

• Could I have the bill, please?

  お会計をお願いできますか？

• Can I borrow your umbrella? I'll bring it back tomorrow.

  傘を借りてもいい？明日返すから。

• May I come in?

  入ってもよろしいですか？（かしこまった言い方）

• Do you mind if I open the window?

  窓を開けてもかまいませんか？

答え方：OK なら Sure. / Of course. / Go ahead.、やんわり断るなら Sorry, I'm using it right now. Could I…? には Yes, of course や Yes, you can と答えます。Yes, you could とは言いません。

手伝いを申し出るとき：Shall I…?（イギリス英語）、Can I…?、Would you like me to…?、または単に I'll…。ものを勧めたり誘ったりするとき：Would you like + 名詞 / to 不定詞?

• You look lost. Can I help you?

  道に迷っているみたいですね。お手伝いしましょうか？

• Would you like me to drive you home?

  家まで車で送ろうか？

• Would you like a slice of cake?

  ケーキをひと切れいかがですか？

• Would you like to come to Hoi An with us next month?

  来月、私たちと一緒にホイアンに行かない？

注意：Would you like…? は勧誘・申し出ですが、Do you like…? は好みをたずねる質問です。

• Do you like green tea? — Yes, I drink it every morning.

  緑茶は好き？ — うん、毎朝飲んでるよ。（好みをたずねる）

• Would you like some green tea? — Yes, please.

  緑茶はいかがですか？ — はい、お願いします。（勧めている）

would like のレッスンと、レッスン「提案」（Shall we…? Why don't we…?）も見てください。

• ✗Would you mind to wait a moment?

  mind のあとは -ing 形です。

• ✗Do you mind if I using your charger?

  ✓Do you mind if I use your charger?

  if I のあとは現在形です。

• ✗May I to come in?

  ✓May I come in?

  may のあとに to はつけません。

• ✗Would you like that I help you?

  ✓Would you like me to help you?

  would like + 人 + to 不定詞。

• ✗Would you like going to the cinema tonight?

  ✓Would you like to go to the cinema tonight?

  would like のあとは to 不定詞です。

• ✗Will I carry your bag?

  ✓Shall I carry your bag?

  申し出には Shall I / Can I を使います。Will I は使いません。
