รูปแบบและการใช้
Could you…? Would you mind…? Can I…? Would you like…? — ถามอย่างสุภาพ
1.ภาพรวม
การขอความช่วยเหลือ การขออนุญาต การเสนอ และการเชิญ — ภาษาอังกฤษใช้ประโยคคำถามกับ can, could, may, would และ shall ทั้งหมด ตารางนี้รวบรวมรูปแบบหลักไว้

ภาษาอังกฤษทำให้คำขอสุภาพด้วยประโยคคำถาม + please และด้วย could / would คำสั่งห้วน ๆ อย่าง “Open the door.” ฟังดูเหมือนออกคำสั่งเมื่อพูดกับคนแปลกหน้า
2.ขอให้คนอื่นทำอะไรให้
Can you…? เป็นแบบกันเอง — ใช้กับเพื่อนและครอบครัว Could you…? สุภาพกว่าและใช้ได้กับแทบทุกคน Would you mind + -ing? สุภาพมาก เหมาะกับการขอความช่วยเหลือเรื่องใหญ่ ในที่นี้ could ไม่ได้มีความหมายเป็นอดีต
Can you turn the TV down a bit?
ช่วยเบาเสียงทีวีลงหน่อยได้ไหม
Could you say that again, please?
ช่วยพูดอีกครั้งได้ไหมคะ
Would you mind waiting a few minutes?
รบกวนรอสักครู่ได้ไหมครับ
Mind แปลว่า “รังเกียจ / ขัดข้อง” ดังนั้นถ้าจะตอบตกลงกับ Would you mind…? ให้พูดว่า No, not at all. / Of course not. — หรือแค่ Sure! ถ้าตอบแค่ “Yes” จะแปลว่า “ใช่ ฉันขัดข้อง”
3.ขอสิ่งของและขออนุญาต
ขอสิ่งของ: Can I have…? / Could I have…? (ในร้านกาแฟและร้านค้า โดยเฉพาะในอเมริกา จะได้ยิน Can I get…? ด้วย) ขออนุญาตทำอะไร: Can I / Could I / May I + กริยา? — May I เป็นทางการที่สุด Do you mind if I…? สุภาพมาก กริยาหลัง if ใช้ Present Simple

วิธีตอบ: ตกลง — Sure. / Of course. / Go ahead. ปฏิเสธแบบนุ่มนวล — Sorry, I'm using it right now. ถ้าถูกถามว่า Could I…? ให้ตอบ Yes, of course หรือ Yes, you can — ไม่ใช่ Yes, you could
4.การเสนอและการเชิญ
เสนอความช่วยเหลือ: Shall I…? (แบบบริติช), Can I…?, Would you like me to…? หรือแค่ I'll… เสนอให้ของหรือเชิญ: Would you like + คำนาม / to + กริยา?
You look lost. Can I help you?
ดูเหมือนคุณหลงทาง ให้ฉันช่วยไหม
Would you like me to drive you home?
ให้ฉันขับรถไปส่งที่บ้านไหม
Would you like a slice of cake?
รับเค้กสักชิ้นไหม

ระวัง: Would you like…? คือการเสนอให้ ส่วน Do you like…? คือการถามว่าชอบอะไร
Do you like green tea? — Yes, I drink it every morning.
คุณชอบชาเขียวไหม — ชอบ ฉันดื่มทุกเช้า (ถามเรื่องความชอบ)
