Forma e uso
Could you…? Would you mind…? Can I…? Would you like…? — chiedere con cortesia
1.Panoramica
Chiedere aiuto, chiedere il permesso, offrire e invitare: per tutte queste cose l'inglese usa domande con can, could, may, would e shall. La tabella raccoglie le strutture principali.
| Funzione | Struttura | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| Chiedere a qualcuno di fare qualcosa | Can / Could / Will / Would you + verbo? · Would you mind + -ing? | Could you help me with this? |
| Chiedere qualcosa | Can / Could / May I have + sostantivo? | Could I have the menu, please? |
| Chiedere il permesso | Can / Could / May I + verbo? · Do you mind if I + present simple? | Can I use your charger? |
| Offrire aiuto | Shall I / Can I + verbo? · Would you like me to + verbo? | Shall I carry that for you? |
| Invitare, offrire qualcosa | Would you like + sostantivo / to + verbo? | Would you like to come for dinner? |
In inglese una richiesta diventa cortese con una domanda + please e con could / would. Un ordine secco come “Open the door.” suona autoritario con uno sconosciuto.
2.Chiedere a qualcuno di fare qualcosa
Can you…? è informale, per amici e familiari. Could you…? è più cortese e va bene quasi con tutti. Would you mind + -ing? è molto cortese, adatto a un favore più grande. Qui could non ha valore di passato.
Can you turn the TV down a bit?
Puoi abbassare un po' la TV?
Could you say that again, please?
Potrebbe ripetere, per favore?
Would you mind waiting a few minutes?
Le dispiacerebbe aspettare qualche minuto?
Mind significa “avere qualcosa in contrario”. Quindi, per dire di sì a Would you mind…?, rispondi No, not at all. / Of course not., oppure semplicemente Sure! Un semplice “Yes” vuol dire “sì, mi dà fastidio”.
3.Chiedere qualcosa e chiedere il permesso
Per chiedere qualcosa: Can I have…? / Could I have…? (nei bar e nei negozi, soprattutto negli Stati Uniti, si sente anche Can I get…?). Per chiedere di fare qualcosa: Can I / Could I / May I + verbo?; May I è il più formale. Do you mind if I…? è molto cortese; il verbo dopo if è al present simple.
Could I have the bill, please?
Mi porta il conto, per favore?
Can I borrow your umbrella? I'll bring it back tomorrow.
Mi presti l'ombrello? Te lo riporto domani.
May I come in?

Do you mind if I open the window?
Ti dispiace se apro la finestra?
Le risposte: sì → Sure. / Of course. / Go ahead.; un no gentile → Sorry, I'm using it right now. A Could I…? rispondi Yes, of course o Yes, you can, non Yes, you could.
4.Offrire e invitare
Per offrire aiuto: Shall I…? (britannico), Can I…?, Would you like me to…? o semplicemente I'll…. Per offrire qualcosa o invitare: Would you like + sostantivo / to + verbo?

Attenzione: Would you like…? è un'offerta; Do you like…? chiede dei tuoi gusti.

Would you like some green tea? — Yes, please.
