Lektion 34 · Etappe 3: Pläne, Bitten & Vergleiche
Verpflichtung: must / have to / need to
AnfängerObligation: must / have to / need to
Form & Gebrauch
sagen, dass etwas notwendig ist
1.Form
Drei Möglichkeiten zu sagen, dass etwas nötig ist: must, have to, need to — alle + Grundform. Must ist ein Modalverb; have to und need to funktionieren wie normale Verben.
| must | have to | need to | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bejaht | I / she must go. | I have to go. · She has to go. | I need to go. · She needs to go. |
| Verneint | mustn't go (= tu es nicht) | don't / doesn't have to go (= nicht nötig) | don't / doesn't need to go (= nicht nötig) |
| Frage | Must I go? (selten) | Do I have to go? · Does she have to go? | Do I need to go? |
| Vergangenheit | — (had to benutzen) | had to go | needed to go |
Must bekommt nie -s, to oder do: She must go. Bei have to / need to ist es umgekehrt: She has to go. Does she need to go?
2.Wann du sie benutzt
1. have to — nötig wegen Regeln, Arbeit oder Umständen (eine Tatsache, nicht die Meinung des Sprechers)
I have to wear a uniform at work.
Linh has to take two buses to get to school.
Do you have to work on Sundays?
It's late. I must go.
Es ist spät. Ich muss los.
I must call my grandma this weekend.
You must try the coconut coffee here — it's amazing!
3. must — schriftliche Regeln, Schilder und Anweisungen
All visitors must sign in at the front desk.
Alle Besucher müssen sich am Empfang anmelden.
Passengers must keep their bags with them at all times.
My phone is almost dead. I need to charge it.
Mein Handy-Akku ist fast leer. Ich muss es aufladen.
Do we need to book a table, or can we just walk in?
5. have got to — dasselbe wie have to, in der lockeren Umgangssprache sehr häufig
Sorry, I've got to go — my bus is leaving.
Tut mir leid, ich muss los — mein Bus fährt gleich.
Im amerikanischen Englisch klingt must für eine Pflicht ziemlich stark und förmlich; Amerikaner sagen meist have to oder have got to (gotta). Im Zweifel passt have to fast immer.
3.Andere Zeitformen: have to benutzen
| Zeit / Form | Beispiel |
|---|---|
| Vergangenheit | I had to wait an hour for the bus. |
| Zukunft | Prices go up next month, so we'll have to pay more. |
| Might have to | We might have to sell the car. |
| Present Perfect | I've had to wear glasses since I was ten. |
| Nach einem anderen Verb | I hate having to get up in the dark. |
4.Mustn't ist etwas ganz anderes als don't have to
| Bedeutung | Beispiel | |
|---|---|---|
You mustn't smoke in here. It's a hospital. |
| don't have to / don't need to | es ist nicht nötig — du kannst, wenn du willst | You don't have to bring food. There's plenty. |
You mustn't touch the paintings.
Du darfst die Gemälde nicht berühren.
You don't have to take your shoes off. Come in!
Du musst die Schuhe nicht ausziehen. Komm rein!
Vorsicht, Falle für Deutschsprachige: mustn't = „darf nicht“ (es ist verboten); „muss nicht“ = don't have to (es ist freiwillig). Verwechsle die beiden nicht. Siehe auch die Lektion „Keine Pflicht: don't have to / needn't“.
