Shadowing Practice: Reimagining IT with ChatGPT - Learn English Speaking with Video

1
Hi, I'm Kunal Malik, and I lead the global IT team at OpenAI.
2
Adding AI to just specific parts of the process is not going to be enough.
3
To really reimagine the process completely is the paradigm in which we can transform.
4
We look at it in three layers.
5
How we amplify individuals by giving them AI tools so that they can increase their throughput.
6
How we amplify an entire team, that's where you have to go to the end-to-end workflow and how you amplify the entire company.
7
And what we've seen using ChatGPT work is amazing.
8
We've seen 5 to 10x increase in throughput of individuals.
9
The biggest operating model shift is that everybody is becoming a builder.
10
And what's interesting is that folks that are closest to the problem actually know how to create the best solutions with AI.
11
Historically, in IT organizations, whenever you have a problem, you come to a physical help desk location or you file a ticket with IT in order for that to be addressed.
12
Here at OpenAI, we've deployed IT agent.
13
Rather than coming and waiting hours or days for a human to see your task and help you with it, you get immediate feedback around what you can do to unblock yourself,
14
or it's escalated to a human queue with context, or the IT agent itself will actually resolve that task for you.
15
It also enables our human help desk teams to be able to focus on those really critical tasks
16
that have high security needs or things that humans are really just uniquely positioned to do.
17
I've seen a lot of our support team actually go and build their own microsites, build their own agents to be able to help them do their jobs more efficiently.
18
Take processes within IT and transform them and really build that credibility to understand how value can be created with AI.
19
Software used to be governed and assessed at a point of time.
20
And that limits its ability to truly understand software for a fast growing company.
21
There are hundreds if not thousands of software in any given company.
22
The tool was able to first group them into roughly 30 categories.
23
ChatTPT work with able to do is give me an initial assessment of what software should potentially keep and grow, and then looking at the risks and governance around them.
24
It actually gave me the first set of advice.
25
A third you need to review, a third you need to retain, another third we need to defer.
26
With the new process, what we think 70% of the software needs can be met with existing software without buying new software.
27
So it's a very powerful analysis that traditionally I think I would take a couple months to get to.
28
Teams that are learning from use cases can then take those learnings, be the starting point for other teams, making those teams further ahead.
29
We created the Ticket Dispenser skill that allows you to just dispense five tickets
30
based off of the highest priority or aging ticket, based off of SLA breach.
31
This is where we store all of our skills that the IT support team has created.
32
It's a good way of sharing skills so
33
that everyone stays in sync with the whole team and everyone's using a fresh, up-to-date skill.
34
CIOs at this point have to make these big bets on
35
how they want to create the right foundation for the company to unlock the value from AI.
36
Having the ability to experiment, to test, to deploy, that allows them to achieve the outcomes much quicker.
37
That is collective acceleration.
38
Cool.
39
I'm getting nuggets in there.
40
Yeah, that's nice.

Context & Background

The video features Kunal Malik, leader of OpenAI's global IT team, discussing how ChatGPT transforms IT workflows. He explains reimagining processes through three layers of amplification—individuals, teams, and companies—and shares real-world examples like AI-powered IT agents, software analysis, and collaborative skill sharing. The dialogue is formal yet conversational, with technical terms balanced by practical insights, making it ideal for learning professional English.

Top 5 Phrases for Daily Communication

  • Amplify throughput: "AI tools help amplify throughput by 5 to 10x." (Increase productivity)
  • End-to-end workflow: "Teams need to optimize the end-to-end workflow." (Full process from start to finish)
  • Unblock yourself: "The IT agent helps you unblock yourself immediately." (Solve a problem independently)
  • Escalated to a human queue: "Complex issues are escalated to a human queue." (Passed to a team for manual handling)
  • Collective acceleration: "Experimentation drives collective acceleration." (Shared progress through collaboration)

Step-by-Step Shadowing Guide

To master the video's pace and pronunciation, use the shadowing technique (or "shadow speak"):

  1. Listen and repeat: Pause after 5-second clips, mimic Malik's tone and stress (e.g., "reimagine the process completely"). Focus on words like "paradigm" (puh-RAD-igm) and "escalated" (ES-kuh-lay-ted).
  2. Chunk phrases: Break down long sentences into parts. For example, "The biggest operating model shift is that everybody is becoming a builder" can be shadowed in two chunks to improve flow.
  3. Record and compare: Record your shadowing, then play it alongside the video. Note differences in intonation—Malik often emphasizes key terms like "5 to 10x" or "70%".
  4. Practice daily: Spend 10 minutes daily on high-value sections (e.g., the three layers of amplification). This builds muscle memory for professional communication.
Learning English with videos like this sharpens both vocabulary and fluency. Use the shadowing technique consistently to see progress in pronunciation and confidence.
