1
I decided to apply for the Masters in Economics at SSC for two reasons,
2
the first of which is the renown of the university on a global stage, but the more important reason for me was
3
when I was doing my bachelor's here the economics faculty really really impressed me at all levels
4
and I wanted to stick with them.
5
I'd say the best thing about our masters is how accessible the professors are.
6
That really surprised me when I started.
7
You can just go up and talk to them and they'll make time for you.
8
Here you can really just email them, talk to them and it works.
9
Economics provides an economic way of thinking about the world
10
which helps you understand the economic and social world around you and the problems the world faces.
11
But perhaps more importantly it also gives you the tool to do something about these problems
12
so the program gives you this economic way of thinking about the world
13
and it also gives you problem solving quantitative skills both in theory
14
and when it comes to working with data
15
so during your first semester here you take mandatory core courses in economics this will be mathematics microeconomics macroeconomics
16
and econometrics during the second semester most students take three
17
or four economic selectives so this can be courses in time series econometrics, development economics or behavioural economics for instance.
18
And during the second year you have more flexibility so you can stay here and take courses,
19
you can go on an exchange to another business school abroad, you can do an internship,
20
but during one of these semesters you write your thesis here at SSE.
21
My research interests are in macroeconomics, kind of the intersection of macroeconomics and labour economics
22
and spilling into household economics
23
and public finance it's a very international program both in terms of students
24
and faculty high quality courses in a range of topics
25
and what i think sets us apart from many other programs is
26
that we're rather small department which makes faculty very approachable students get to know us
27
and get for example very high quality thesis supervision we will teach
28
you to look far beyond the bullet points with buzzwords in glossy PowerPoint presentations.
29
And this will make you a better decision maker in almost any high level position
30
you can think of where you need to navigate a complex economic and social world.
31
I define myself as a structural econometrician with an interest in estimation of games of incomplete information.
32
The course I'm teaching at SSE is called Industrial Organization and it studies competition, imperfect competition between firms using game theory.
33
So basically we are going to look at different settings such as oligopoly, mergers, cartels, collusion using this framework.
34
And also we are going to use empirical methods of demand estimation in order to bring these models to the data.
35
Many of our students chose this program
36
because they wanted to gain the tools to be able to change the world for the better through whichever field
37
they end up in.
38
So whether that be the private sector, the public sector, academia or something entirely different.
39
For this program we are looking for applicants who are passionate about economics
40
and have taken at least 30 ECTS in that subject previously.
41
You should also feel comfortable taking courses containing a high degree of math since the first year
42
and in particular the first semester will contain a lot of
43
that and then during the second year you will be able to tailor the program according to your individual preferences.
44
Some tips and advice I have for applying to SSE or
45
if you're thinking about applying to SSE is really start as
46
soon as you feel like you want to apply don't postpone it any longer than you have to
47
and ask the school for information if you need information.
48
My cohort is wonderful in the sense
49
that they are from all over the place from all sorts of backgrounds
50
but a pretty balanced bunch considering nationality gender what have you
51
and what's wonderful about them is that they all have different journeys
52
that they've been on but we're also all in the same place
53
and when we're lost or
54
when we're on the point of despairing we can help each other
55
and figure out where to go from here
56
if you come to sse to study economics you will be challenged
57
you will learn a lot you will be better equipped for your future career
58
but you will also have learned the tools to really change the world for the better.
59
But last but not the least, it's also tremendously fun to study economics.
